Mark this as a very big rumor, but Jon Favreau’s street cred is incredibly high right now. With anticipation for Iron Man 2 soaring, his next project on the horizon, Cowboys & Aliens, is starting to flex its muscles. We saw Robert Downey, Jr. drop from the project, only to be replaced by Daniel Craig shortly thereafter. Olivia Wilde recently beamed aboard the project, and now Latino Review is reporting that Harrison Ford is rumored to play an unannounced role in Cowboys & Aliens, which would be yet another feather in Favreau’s cap.

The rumor seemed to start when whispers of Ford playing in a large comic book film that was being helmed by a director coming off a huge comic book film began floating around. Then Favreau posted on his Twitter that “Some very cool Cowboys & Aliens casting news coming soon…” Putting the two together seems a logical step, as having Ford in this project would be very cool.

For more on the project, including the release date and a rundown of the plot, hit the jump.

The release of Cowboys & Aliens is pegged for July 29, 2011, with shooting set for this July. That gives them a year to film and finish post production, and the whole thing may or may not be filmed in 3D. The project should start filling out more in the coming months, and this may turn into more than just a rumor.

Meanwhile, the plot is pretty easy to follow but awesome crazy. Set in Arizona during the 1800s, aliens invade and it is up to a group of cowboys and Apache Indians to band together and fight off the menace. Sounds awesome, right? Add in the fact that it is being written by Roberto Orci/Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, Star Trek) and Damon Lindelof (Lost), and this should be on everyone’s radar.
