Very Brief Thoughts After Watching HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – Part 1

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted:November 11th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

I’m in London.  I’m over on the other side of the pond because tomorrow is the London press junket for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and I got to see the film tonight.  While we’ve been asked not to write full reviews, we have been cleared to write some initial thoughts.  Since I’m a bit pressed on time, I’m keeping it very brief.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 is as close to the book as any fan could hope for.  While there are some changes (it is a movie after all), many of the scenes played out exactly as I envisioned them while reading the final installment.  But to me, the best part was having the time to not rush through scenes because of the limits of a two and a half hour movie.  As you watch Deathly Hallows – Part 1, you’ll notice is moves at a different pace than the previous movies.  And I liked it.  A lot. I will say…when the credits started rolling, I wished Part 2 was being released tomorrow.  At least we only have to wait till next summer.

Oh, one last thing, while I thought Part 1 might have had a chance at Best Picture, it’s not getting a nomination.  But Part 1 has set up what should be an amazing finale.  One that might have the emotional payoff for a Best Picture nom.  Much more Harry Potter coverage soon.

Sounds interesting !! I hope they did not cut to much, to get a lower rating, so that Kids can watch it. I wanna have a brutal, dark Harry potter.

brilliant! It’s great to hear good news about it, I saw the guardian first review and they only gave it two stars – but I had to force that out of my mind because however much I like the guardian’s news, they are pretentious twats when they come to film reviews.

Can’t wait to read the full review. Collider’s coverage of Part I so far has been stellar (the interviews are the best I’ve seen for this movie), and I’m happy that this reporter liked it.

    Hey Steve ‘Frosty’

UGO mentioned/joked about your apparent wearing of a Gryffindor scarf to the premiere.

Warner Brothers should be ashamed for not hiring better directors for this franchise. Which let’s admit had alot of potential inspite of it’s humble origins.

    Such a waste and shame.

Steve, could you tell me if, in your opinion, it´s the best Harry Potter movie? My expectations are high, but I was disappointed by The Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince, as a huge fan of the books. I trust you, so I would like to know how this movie fits in the regular quality of the saga.
