Could a HARRY POTTER Quidditch Movie Be in the Works?

     September 27, 2013

With the recent news that author J.K. Rowling is penning the screenplay for a brand new film set within the world of Harry Potter, we have confirmation that Deathly Hallows – Part 2 did not mark the end for this magical world onscreen.  While there are sure to be remakes and reboots down the line, the franchise is currently still in the safe hands of Rowling, and a new adventure based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is on its way.  Along with the official announcement of Rowling’s involvement in the new movie was also the news that it is planned as the first in a series of new films, and recent trademarks by Warner Bros. suggest that one such spinoff film could possibly revolve around the game of Quidditch.  Hit the jump for more.

quidditch-through-the-agesThe folks over at Bleeding Cool recently took note that, in addition to snatching up the trademarks for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Warner Bros. has also trademarked the following Harry Potter-related items:

  • Newt Scamander, the ficticious author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
  • Tales of Beedle The Bard
  • Quidditch Through the Ages
  • The Quiddidtch teams Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons, and Kenmare Kestrels.
  • Quiddidtch expert and Quiddidtch Through the Ages author Kennilworthy Whisp.

Those last three items are rather curious, and might suggest that a film involving Quidditch could possibly be in the pipeline for Warner Bros.  It could be that Quidditch just plays a major role in the Fantastic Beast film or a subsequent entry in the new series, but nevertheless it’s interesting to see that Warner Bros. has Quidditch on the brain.  Obviously the studio would like to keep the lucrative Harry Potter franchise alive as long as possible, and Quidditch would appear to be one way to continue on without involving any of the actual characters from Harry Potter.

Obviously trademarks are not confirmations of movies in development, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a Quidditch-themed film or TV series was currently in the works.  Whether it ever comes to fruition or not is anyone’s guess, but as long as Rowling is involved I’m game.

  • Yup

Bad News Bears meets Mighty Ducks on a Quidditch Field

    Slow news day?

  • Norrtron

If they make a movie centered around Quidditch then that will be when WB has officially began to milk the franchise.

    • AJD1984

It’s only like Star Wars being milked by Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox/Disney. If there are fans and for both frnachises there is a huge fandom then why not milk it. I welcome this news very much.

Because a lot of Harry Potter fans don’t want it to end up like Star Wars.

  • Leo Atrox

Not a movie. Theme park ride.

    • Andy

I’d take a Quidditch roller coaster any day!

A movie focused on Quidditch would be boring. I thought the Quidditch matches in the movies started to get boring because of the repetitiveness. If there was a new twist to the game or something would be better

True, even JKR herself has said that writing the Quidditch scenes for the books got boring before long and she came up with excuses to not show them, or to throw in wacky events to spice them up.

    • RiddleThemThis

There are plenty of sports based movies that have turned out very well. The key is to focus moreso on the characters rather than the sport itself. A quidditch movie can work just the same as any of those. I’m not a big fan of this idea, but it doesn’t sound impossible to pull off.

I wouldn’t read too much into it. They’re making a movie based on one of the books so they went and trademarked the titles and authors for all three. Honestly I’m surprised they didn’t all have trademarks on them already. The only one that’s a bit of a surprise at all is the team names.

Quidditch movie? Nah. But Quidditch TV show? That would be interesting.

  • HaroldTram

George Clooney’s “Leatherheads” in Quidditch form. Boo-yaah!

  • Blues

The story of the “Chudley Cannons” where its just Bad News Bears with quidditch

  • HeSaidSheSaidReviewSite

Who the hell watch a movie the revolves around the most boring and pointless parts of the books? Notice how they were dropped as the series went on?

Not to mention, it was a stupid, dumb, lame game. There’s no point to any of players other than the one that has to catch that little ball with wings.
