With the recent news that author J.K. Rowling is penning the screenplay for a brand new film set within the world of Harry Potter, we have confirmation that Deathly Hallows – Part 2 did not mark the end for this magical world onscreen. While there are sure to be remakes and reboots down the line, the franchise is currently still in the safe hands of Rowling, and a new adventure based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is on its way. Along with the official announcement of Rowling’s involvement in the new movie was also the news that it is planned as the first in a series of new films, and recent trademarks by Warner Bros. suggest that one such spinoff film could possibly revolve around the game of Quidditch. Hit the jump for more.
The folks over at Bleeding Cool recently took note that, in addition to snatching up the trademarks for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Warner Bros. has also trademarked the following Harry Potter-related items:
- Newt Scamander, the ficticious author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
- Tales of Beedle The Bard
- Quidditch Through the Ages
- The Quiddidtch teams Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons, and Kenmare Kestrels.
- Quiddidtch expert and Quiddidtch Through the Ages author Kennilworthy Whisp.
Those last three items are rather curious, and might suggest that a film involving Quidditch could possibly be in the pipeline for Warner Bros. It could be that Quidditch just plays a major role in the Fantastic Beast film or a subsequent entry in the new series, but nevertheless it’s interesting to see that Warner Bros. has Quidditch on the brain. Obviously the studio would like to keep the lucrative Harry Potter franchise alive as long as possible, and Quidditch would appear to be one way to continue on without involving any of the actual characters from Harry Potter.
Obviously trademarks are not confirmations of movies in development, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a Quidditch-themed film or TV series was currently in the works. Whether it ever comes to fruition or not is anyone’s guess, but as long as Rowling is involved I’m game.
