Memorial Day is still quite awhile off, but that’s not stopping the History Channel from teasing you with a sneak peek trailer at their forthcoming drama series Hatfields & McCoys, the chronicle of one of the most infamous family rivalries in American history. Kevin Costner plays “Devil” Anse Hatfield and Bill Paxton plays Randall McCoy in the three-part miniseries from that hits cable this summer. This trailer looks damn good, and seems like a fine return to the Western genre for Costner who has delivered such classics as Dances with Wolves. Check out the trailer after the jump along with a short synopsis of the conflict between the Hatfields and McCoys.

Trailer via History Channel’s official website:

Here’s a synopsis for the Hatfield/McCoy conflict:

The Hatfield-McCoy saga begins with Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy. Close friends and comrades during the Civil War, they returned to their neighboring homes — Hatfield in West Virginia, McCoy just across the Tug River border in Kentucky — to increasing tensions, misunderstandings and resentments that soon exploded into all-out warfare between the two families. As hostilities grew, friends, neighbors and outside forces joined the fight, bringing the two states to the brink of another Civil War.

Their story also includes: a tempestuous love affair between Hatfield’s son and McCoy’s daughter, which had disastrous consequences; the execution of McCoy’s three young sons in retaliation for the Rasputin-like murder of Hatfield’s beloved brother; a New Year’s Massacre of the McCoy clan and burning of their home, which also sparked international headlines; a public clash between state governors; and ultimately the involvement of the United States Supreme Court.

    I like it.

At first glance, looks tempting. Hopefully, other than the names, it will have some semblance to what actually happened.

Looks like they’re already off to a bad start. Anse and Randall weren’t friends during the American Civil War. Hatfields were Confederates and McCoys were Unionists. The militias ravaged the area stealing and killing all over Tug Valley.

I’m aware of Anse Hatfield serving in the military during Civil War but am unaware of Randall (Randolph) serving. Like most familie, members of both served with the CSA & Union. The only Randall McCoy listed in online Civil War archives from that area served in the CSA with the Virginia Militia, where Hatfield was serving.

That’s not what Wiki says. “The majority of the Hatfields living in Mingo County (…eventually West Virginia) fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War; most McCoys, living in Pike County, Kentucky, also fought for the Confederacy; with the exception of Asa Harmon McCoy, who fought for the Union.” Only one member of the McCoys fought for the Union. It says that even if his murder by a group of “ex-Confederate Homeguards called the “Logan Wildcats,” which included some Hatfields, didn’t start their feud, it is counted as “the first real act of violence” in it. While it may be easier to think of things in stark black and white terms (dichotomous logic), and the desire to do some comes from having it driven into our heads that “the simplest answer is usually the right one” (parsimony), life seldom actually occurs that way. Complexity and depth abound, even when we are convinced to try to ignore it to justify whatever feelings and beliefs we have prior to meeting something new or different.

My ancestors came from this area of Appalachia and my family was connected to the Hatfields. I’ve always had a fascination about this story and I hope this program does it justice.

  • Renee McCoy-Black

Iam a McCoy & my dad’s family is from Kentucky. I too hope the mimi series is accurate in telling the story. I can’t wait to watch it.

I am a McCoy & my dad’s family is from Kentucky. I too hope this mini series is accurate in retelling the story. All I know is what I’ve been told by family members that traced our family tree back to Scotland & Ireland. I was invited to a big family reunion back in 1999 by a web site called “Real-McCoy’s.com” They also invited the Hatfield’s for a softball game dubbed “The fued of Y2K”. They all started fueding again over remains of dead relatives! I can’t wait to see this:)

Please, pretty please, History Channel make this series based on fact and not Hollyweird fiction, please?

  • tisha

I’m also related to the McCoy’s. My grandmother Mavis McCoy is from Kentucky.

  • susan

I am a descendant of the Hatfield line. My 3rd greatgrandfather was a 1st cousin to Anderson Hatfield. Proven and documented. I do hope some accuracy comes with the series. The truth is most often much more interesting and facinating than todays fiction.

  • Sharon Hatfield

Well I am one of those Hatfields, and the stories my dad use to tell us kids was that feud started over a hog, but in my later years l do believe it may have started over Jonse Hatfield ( I believe was his name) and Rose Anna McCoy being in love with each other. I was born in North Matewan WV right near the WV and KY boarder.

The feud did not start because of a romance…the hatfields and mccoys came immigrated to the US together they were the first settlers in the mountains tension started long before the romance..tht was just fuel to the fire originally it was because of property rights.. anderson hatfield’s brother was my great great great grandfather. id be more than happy to get in to detail just ask

    • Kheru Djhuti

      please tell us more.

When I first heard the music I absolutely fell in love with this. I have relatives all over this area of Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia and pride and family and land rights and religion are so deeply embedded in their lives. It’s just a different world and a different set of values in the mountains. Not in any way bad, just different. Ok. I love these people. I still have very close relatives in Floyd, Va.. And I’m from the west coast but when I go there I feel so much at home, it’s weird. I guess it’s in the DNA or something. But I can hardly wait until we all can see it. I’m pre-ordering it on Amazon so I can have my own copy. Ordering the CD music all so. Who knows maybe alot of us are distantly related to each other through the Hatfields and McCoys.

Kentucky was claimed by the CSA s Randolph McCoy fought with hatfeild and were freinds. kentucky was never for the union and there was only one Randolph McCoy in the civil war and is the same one in the movie. so they have it right so far. i know this because we just got down before school went out for the summer with these subject and to make sure the the text book and ny teacher was right i went to two different libraries and all the books i checked out and read all say the same thing.

  • brighteyes76

the movie needs to have allot of the cussing taking out of it and they really need to take away the bad cussing on the cast using God’s name in vain.. that turned me off on the movie… but it was good to learn more about my family traits, since my family is the Mccoys.. from the outskirts of Pikeville,KY …my grandfather was Ernest Rice Mccoy.. but shhhhhh don’t tell anyone…lol.

Thanks , I have recently been searching for info about this subject for a while and yours is the greatest I have came upon so far. However, what concerning the bottom line? Are you sure concerning the supply?|What i do not realize is actually how you’re no longer actually much more smartly-favored than you might be now. You are very intelligent.

Keven Costner Used the language of the Indians in “Dances with wolves”, yet he did not find it necessary to use the accent of the mountain people in the Hatfields and the Mccoys. Maybe he has no appreciation for the language of Southern Mountian people. . It’s suppose to be history and someone is trying to change history to be something it is not. Does the North need a translater to understand the South?

I thought it was great. Live in Oklahoma, but heard of H&Mc all my life, the most impressive thing I came away with was just the sheer sadness of life back then, not a good time for anyone who survived that period. I thought they did a good job reminding it’s not just men who go though bad times, but the women had to survive the men’s issues, problems, pride, and sheer stubborness. Horrible time for mothers, to see their children killed off one by one. I loved both stars in the show, KC and BP are wonderful actors, KC is great at western movies, Open Range is my FAVORITE, hopefully, they can do another one sometime. Good Job History Channel
