Captain America: Civil War marked the death of Steve Roger’s love (Peggy Carter) and the birth of another (Sharon Carter), but let’s think about that for a second: Steve kisses Peggy during the first Cap movie, awakens in the present after his icy sleep to find her a senile elderly woman, but her younger relative is single and ready to mingle. It’s just a little messed up if you think about it too much, and actress Hayley Atwell seems to concur.
Atwell, who portrays Agent Peggy Carter on both the big and small screens, joked about the new MCU romance at the Dallas Comic-Con Fan Expo. She said, according to IGN:
Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like “no.” And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a supervillain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass, as well…I just feel that, you know – I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, “Don’t touch that. You can’t tap that!”
Elsewhere, Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon, was asked by the Toronto Sun last month about the inherent creepiness of her character’s kiss with Steve. “I always thought that was a bit strange, but I also get it,” she said. “I understand it. It’s something that brings them together, this mutual love for this woman who influenced both of their lives in such a tremendous way.”
It’s difficult to know if we’ll see this relationship develop in future movies. Civil War saw the current lineup of Avengers displaced, including Cap, who went off the grid. Sharon, similarly, went on the run after she helped the star-spangled Avenger get his gear back from the government. But there’s always cameo appearances to consider and the big Infinity War.
