A new trailer for Steven Sodebergh‘s spy-action flick Haywire has gone online.  The film stars MMA fighter Gina Carano as a burned spy who takes revenge against her handlers.  The new trailer again sells the basic concept: here’s a woman who’s really hot, and she’ll hit you so hard that all of your progeny will feel pain.  The plot looks like standard spy-movie fare, but it appears that Soderbergh is setting his movie apart by embracing the brutality of the fight scenes between Carano and her male co-stars, and questioning how far the audience is willing to go when it comes to seeing a woman getting hit even though she’s holding her own in the fight.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.  The film also stars Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Angarano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, and Bill PaxtonHaywire opens January 20, 2012.

Here’s the official synopsis for Haywire:

This dynamic action-thriller directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) boasts a talented cast that includes Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zoro), Bill Paxton (“Big Love”), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Michael Angarano (Almost Famous); and introduces mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano as Mallory Kane, in a demanding lead role that has her performing her own high-adrenaline stunts.

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.

Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

  1. Woohoo!! Gina Carano looks a like a strong, empowered and sexy special-ops agent! Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait Man! I feel like a woman!

  2. Gina Carano is so voluptuous and sexy. I hope she does more mainstream movies from now on. She is a very talented actress, mixed martial arts fighter and model.

  3. How far will the audience go when it comes to seeing a woman getting hit, even when she’s holding her own? Has this reviewer seen Mr. and Mrs. Jones, or The Fifth Element, or any of the Resident Evil films? As long as she kicks ass, and looks hot doing it, her place in movies is secure.

  4. “Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer)” – The Ghost Writer? Seriously? That’s the film credit they give him for the synopsis? He friggin Obi Wan Kenobi!!! How do that not put Star Wars?

  5. Steven always gets an all star cast but IMHO falls short. We probably saw the best stuff in the trailer.
I won’t be catching this. I didn’t waste my time with contagion either.
I remember the oceans movies. Sucked balls.
Steven was just too offing cheeky with Brad and George.

    • You didnt waste your time with contagion? and he is to cheeky with brad and george? 1) Contagion was a great movie and drama with an all star cast not with brad or george. 2) These are stevens last movies and why not go balls to the wall?

Oceans werent shit if you saw the original and the remake of the first was good

      get real bro

  6. This looks so damn awful. OH LOOK A SPY WHO IS A WOMAN BUT CAN STILL FIGHT! BET YOU DIDN’T EXPECT THAT! This concept is tired as hell. I’m surprised such a great cast signed on to this. Also Gina can’t act her way out of a paper bag.

  7. Finally a spy chick that actually has some muscle and could believably hurt a dude, instead of some waif like Angelina Jolie or Zoe Saldana.
