As we reported last week, HBO was in talks with Apple TV to offer a subscription service called HBO Now that would be free of cable. Today, the news is official: though anyone can watch HBO Now from web browsers, the only streaming service to carry it will be Apple TV (does that mean you could just Chromecast it to your TV though?)

HBO CEO Richard Plepler said today in an Apple press event that "All you need to get HBO Now is a broadband connection and an Apple device." (Apple is also doing its part in the deal by reducing the cost of Apple TV from $99 to $69, to better compete with other streaming services). HBO Now will feature similar content to HBO Go, including their entire library of original series, as well as their catalogue of movies.

Also of note, customers will get a free month of service if they sign up from an Apple device in April, when the app launches (just in time for Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, and Veep). Apple's exclusivity with the deal will last for three months, and the HBO Now price is listed at $14.99 a month (cheaper than actually bundling it with your cable, if I'm correct in my thinking).

This deal has been a long time in coming. Here's the official trailer for the launch, with some teasers of the series that will be included:
