Back in 2008 Kevin Spacey made quite a splash on HBO starring in Recount, the Jay Roach directed chronicle of the weeks after the 2000 U.S. presidential election and the subsequent recounts in Florida. Now it looks like Spacey is making a return to the cable network with Rod Lurie (who wrote The Contender and directed Resurrecting the Champ). Variety reports HBO is finalizing a deal to develop a new drama series called The Crux with Spacey attached to star and Lurie directing the pilot in addition to co-writing the script with producing partner Marc Frydman.  More after the jump.

The Crux takes place in LA following the charismatic cult leader (Spacey) of a multi-billion dollar worldwide cult as opposed to a smaller, more localized organizations like the Branch Davidians. Lurie says Spacey's involvement is "a perfect marriage between an actor and a role," with Spacey really bringing a lot of ideas and depth to the character in pitch meetings for the series. There's not much to sink our teeth into yet, but apparently the series pitch sparked a bidding war with other networks like FX and Showtime, so it has to be pretty damn good. For my money, Spacey is one of the finest actor's working today, and I'll watch him in just about anything. Stay tuned as this series develops.
