First Look at Helena Bonham Carter in Mike Newell’s GREAT EXPECTATIONS

by     Posted 2 years, 301 days ago

Production is currently underway on director Mike Newell’s (Four Weddings and a Funeral) adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations, and today we’ve got our first look at star Helena Bonham Carter in character as Miss Havisham. To answer your question: no, Tim Burton has nothing to do with this movie. Carter is joined by Ralph Fiennes who’s playing Magwitch, as well as Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as Pip, Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) as Estella, with Robbie Coltrane (Harry Potter), Jason Flemyng (X-Men: First Class), and Sally Hawkins (Happy Go Lucky).

Hit the jump to check out the images, as well as a synopsis for Dickens’ novel for those unfamiliar. Great Expectations will be released in the fall of 2012.

Here’s the synopsis for Great Expectations:

Pip, a poor orphan being raised by a cruel sister, does not have much in the way of great expectations between his terrifying experience in a graveyard with a convict named Magwitch and his humiliating visits with the eccentric Miss Havisham’s beautiful but manipulative niece, Estella, who torments him until he is elevated to wealth by an anonymous benefactor. Full of unforgettable characters, Great Expectations is a tale of intrigue, unattainable love, and all of the happiness money can’t buy. Great Expectations has the most wonderful and most perfectly worked-out plot for a novel in the English language, according to John Irving, and J. Hillis Miller declares, Great Expectations is the most unified and concentrated expression of Dickens’s abiding sense of the world, and Pip might be called the archetypal Dickens hero. [Amazon]

    Great casting.

this is certainly different from Cuaron’s GREAT EXPECTATION.

it actually feels like let loose Burton. LOL

If there ever was a character from literature made to function in a Tim Burton movie, it’s Miss Havisham, so that makes sense.

Speaking of making sense…. Great Expectations doesn’t, that’s why Havisham can get away with looking so nutty. I hope this movie embraces the nonsensical aspects of the story.

Looks exactly like the David Lean version. Which is a good thing.

How long will it be before a promo pic of Holliday Grainger as Estella becomes available?

  • Gemini71

It’s been four days now, and still no word on when we can expect a promotional image of Holliday Grainger as Estella to be officially released online. How much longer do we have to wait for one?

  • Gemini71

I am still waiting on news that a production image of Holliday Grainger is going to be released within the next few days. Is that going to happen?

Still waiting for confirmation that a production image of Holliday Grainger as Estella is due to surface within the next few days. Is that going to happen?

Why is it taking so long for a promotional image of Holliday Grainger to become available? She is meant to be one of the film’s main stars, but you wouldn’t think it from the publicity for the film. She plays Estella, who is one of the main protagonists in the story, but even David Walliams who plays the character Uncle Pumblechook, who has a lesser part in the novel than Grainger’s character, gets himself a promo image ahead of her. I cannot understand why there should be this much of a delay in seeing Miss Grainger as Miss Havesham’s adopted daughter.

I am still waiting for an image of Holliday Grainger as Estella to be officialy unveiled. This is the sixth message I have left. I run a blog dedicated to this actress, and I am waiting for a promotional photo of her as Estella, so I can post it on this blog. Can someone please find out when such a photo will be made available?

Two more months have elapsed, and there is still no photo of Holliday Grainger as Estella. Why is it taking so long for an promotional still of her playing this role to become available? I have been waiting for nearly half a year for one to emerge. I am the moderator of a blog dedicated to this actress, and I am keen to determine when such a picture will be officially unveiled. Can someone please give me some idea when this will occur?

It’s now a few months until the film is due for release, and the distributor for Great Expectations has still not released an official still of Holliday Grainger as Estella. Why is it taking so long for an image of her in this role to become available?
