Hell or High Water is one of the year’s most successful indies, and with good reason. It’s a sharp, smart neo-western that taps into economic anxieties by repositioning banks as the modern day bandits, and outlaws as heroes against a system designed to keep them poor. Director David Mackenzie never gets heavy handed with subtext because the driver of the story is always the relationship between the characters, whether it’s the fraternal bond between brothers Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner (Ben Foster) or Texas Rangers Marcus Hamilton (Jeff Bridges) and Alberto Parker (Gil Birmingham).

In this exclusive clip of the bonus features from the upcoming Hell or High Water digital release, Pine, Foster, and Mackenzie discuss the bond between Toby and Tanner and how it drives them on their crime spree. “At its core, the engine of this movie is about brotherly love,” explains Foster. And he’s absolutely right. For all of its pointed commentary about how banks have left poor people in the dust, the heart of the movie is the relationship between Toby and Tanner, and if you didn’t care about them, you wouldn’t care about their struggle. Foster and Pine give a couple of their best performances in Hell or High Water, and it’s another reason why you absolutely should see this movie if you haven’t already.
