Henry Cavill is SUPERMAN!

     January 30, 2011

Henry_Cavill-superman slice

After months of speculation, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have announced that Henry Cavill will play Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming Superman film directed by Zack Snyder.  Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film.  The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.  The untitled Superman film is scheduled for a December 2012 release. Here’s what Snyder said about Cavill:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen.  I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry.  He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

More, including the official announcement, after the jump.

Cavill is perhaps best known for his role on The Tudors, but this will surely thrust the 27-year-old actor on to a ridiculously large stage.  I’m not too familiar with Cavill’s work, but I count that in his favor.  Superman is such an iconic role, that it’s probably best to hand it to a relative unknown to free the audience of preconceived notions.  I’m eager to see Cavill in a Superman context — how he wears the costume, his physical presence, his take on the Clark Kent mannerisms, etc.

And you can bet I’ll be watching his upcoming projects more closely.  Cavill recently wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and stars in the upcoming Immortals, due November 11.

Here’s the official announcement:

BURBANK, CA, January 30, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen.  I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry.  He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film.  The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan.  Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

I’m the LAST person to comment on the nationality of an actor, but Cavill is not American and Superman is inherently American. I’m not sure how I feel about a British actor playing All-American Clark Kent. It doesn’t seem authentic. That would be like hiring an American to play the Doctor.

    • Johnny

Next thing we see is an indian James Bond.

    • Max

Wrong buddy. Superman is KRYPTONIAN. Besides, who gives a crap if he’s British? There are no physical differences to speak of, just an accent that’s easy to cover up.

      • white goodman

        Nerd alert!!!

Anyway he is an AMERICAN Icon and I tend to agree that should have played at least a part in the casting but its Hollywood what do you expect.

Routh should have been the choice for sheer appearance purposes, dude looks just Reeves

    • Mike

He might have grown up in Smallville, but Kal-el belongs to the world.

    • LAURIE

Could you tell Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes was American? That’s how you won’t be able to tell Cavill’s Superman is British. A great actor is a great actor. I followed him four four years on the Tudors and have been eagerly awaiting his star to shine. This guy is fabulous.

    • Avenging World

We already had an Australian with a waxed chest and an American accent playing the Canadian superhero Wolverine.

    • Avenging World

Do not agree with anything else dude has said, but Watchmen did suck balls.
      Read book instead.

Zack on this movie worries me, but hopefully Nolan will have a good effect. Inception I thought was overrated, but you can’t beat Dark Knight

    • Dev1359

People seem to be perfectly fine with British actors playing Batman and Gordon in Nolan’s movies. And Superman might have been raised in America but that doesn’t mean he was born there. There’s nothing to say that a British actor can’t pull off the role…some of the most talented actors today are all British and Australian.

    • sense 11

Seriously??? your going to pull that card. Superman protects the world.

    • Tallulah

I know, right! It’s like an American actor playing Sherlock Holmes or something!

  • nelson

or like a Welsh actor to play batman …oh wait

    • Conehead2188

Or a Brit could play Spiderman, an Aussie could play Thor, a Canadian could play The Green Lantern and Deadpool, etc.

  • J.R.

Perfect casting!!!! I wanted this guy for Supes since day one!!!!

  • Jason

I don’t have an opinion on him yet because I’ve never seen his work. I have heard that The Tudors is in excellent series though.

  • RecceR

I think that Cavill will do great as Superman. For the people who are not happy because he is British and feel Superman is an “American role,” it’s not a huge deal. Look at Batman, Christian Bale is Welsh with a thick accent (yet he has a great American one). Everyone loves Bale as Batman, so give Cavill a chance. And Batman was supposed to be American, but technically Superman was an alien, so yeah. With a brilliant mind like Christopher Nolan behind this film, I have no doubt he would pick an actor for the spot that he did not feel was anything less than the best choice. Especially since the several last Superman films were huge disappointments.

    • Al

Eh Christian Bale’s american accent is alright but as Bruce Wayne he always seems like he’s over acting too much when he’s trying to make people think he’s a douche. Nolan’s batman movies are the best but due Bale’s occasional over acting and that incredibly annoying Batman voice he had in the Dark Knight I can’t say he’s the best batman, though he does have the best material. Hopefully this guy goes over better than Brandon Routh. Cavill seems a bit young, Superman is supposed to have a look of wisdom and experience, eh. In Nolan I trust.

  • Mike

Well I think we all must agree that movie companies now a days are removing anything American from American Icons, hell Captain America wont even have that in their title in foreign markets, and the director of that film has said that Captain America is not a flag waver, and even muted his costume to not appear American, until Americans not support these films they will cont. to do so.

Lest we forget that Superman Returns removed “The American Way”, from “Truth, Justice and the American Way”.

Just le the producers know that you will not spend 1 penny to see this film and maybe (I doubt it though) that they will change there way of thinking.

Because remember they know better and the rest of us are just sheep who will do what they are told.

    • Spede

      Don’t watch it then chump.

    • SuperBeens

And don’t forget that Superman was even co-created by a Canadian.

    • Jeff

“Well I think we all must agree…” not really. In fact I don’t agree at all. I’m all for patriotism, but this whole “American way” flap from the last film is ridiculous. Who cares? There were a lot of problems with Superman Returns, and that was the least of them.

I hate when ignorant people take every minor detail changed as an assault on their nation. As though Captain America’s supposedly “muted” costume isn’t still 99 percent red white an blue.

Could it be that the costume in the comics was deemed to be too flamboyant to work on film? Of course not! They changed it because they hate America. Right Mike? Makes perfect sense.

Keep your pennies. And don’t preface your own stupidity with “we must all agree.”

    • 28KnownGalaxies

Agreed. I remember that great scene in Superman II when Christopher Reeve flew across the screen at the end carrying Old Glory. When I was a kid and saw that in the movies, the audience cheered wildly. It was a great patriotic moment. Do you think there’s any chance such a scene or even a hint of American patriotism will be allowed in this film with the British Supes? Not bloody likely. And I think we could all use a nice little dose of patriotism wherever we can get it especially in these divisive and uncertain times in our nation. Why not do so in a movie featuring an iconic American character who also serves a global protector?

I watched one of the behind-the-scenes features on the DVD of Superman Returns where one of the writers was interviewed. He said something to the effect that they avoided any distinctly American association with Superman for that film because patriotic American displays were supposedly frowned upon in today’s movie market. So yes, there is an attempt to mute any American identity associated with these characters in Hollywood today. It’s just more liberal BS geared towards revising these iconic characters in order to fit the left’s general disdain towards any positive portrayals of America in the media.

  • Chris

Great Casting, I’m excited too see this come together.

  • Arthur Marcus

This franchise is hungry for greatness! This is the time to rebuild the franchise. They better not include Lex Luthor or General Zod in any Superman movies for a while. They should utilise the villains that weren’t included in the previous films such as Bizarro, Brainiac, Doomsday, Metallo, Toyman, Darkseid, Atomic Skull, Bloodsport, Bruno Mannheim, Conduit, Cyborg Superman, Faora, Gog, Imperiex, Intergang, Jax-Ur, Kryptonite Man, Livewire, Mala, Mercy Graves, Mongul, Morgan Edge, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Parasite, Prankster, Sam Lane, Silver Banshee, Solaris, Superboy-Prime, Superman Revenge Squad, Terra-Man, Titano, Ultra-Humanite, Ultraman. This is a second chance to get it right. This is an opportunity.

    • Rob

And let’s not forget: Chickadee, Lightning Lady, the Flaming Robot, Tree Stump, Prehistoric Birdman, Crazy Mermaid, Bug Bomb, Fast Turtle, The Human Gun, Frosty the Snowman, The Cloud, Super Truck, Grease Fire, Adolf Hitler, Mr. Strong, The Plant, Arthur Marcus, The Fart, Dino Dan, The Jerk, Mountain Momma, Freezer Burn, Oil Slick, General Yuck, Bubbles, Sleepwalker, Microwave, Lady Diamond, Walking Volcano, the Thinker, and Pillow Power.

(Just having fun. I’m not making fun of you.)

      • Bill Graham

If they include Bizarro, I will fucking explode. Might my all with him hate I.

  • Carla Börjesson

They will probably cast one of the below rising young actresses as Lois Lane:

Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Sophia Bush, Miley Cyrus, Kat Dennings, Hilary Duff, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Taylor Momsen, Ellen Page, Emma Roberts, Jessica Szohr, Evan Rachel Wood

    • Max

I’m sorry but miley cyrus will NEVER be cast as lois lane in a billion years. Even hollywood isn’t that stupid.

    • Jeff

Miley Cyrus as Lois Lane? Sounds like a bad SNL sketch. Not that there are any other kind these days…

Seriously though, my 40-year-old bus driver neighbor (a 300 pound dude) has about as much of a chance of playing Lois Lane as Cyrus or Hillary Duff. Just sayin’.

  • Terry

    What a joke!
I could care less about the English part(is he English?Update. Yeah he is.) but he isn’t the so-called all American Superman. Come on man.
What, is this suppose to be rock and roll superman? Grunge?
I love Zack’s effects laden movies but this dude, Cavill, looks like an effing douche bag!
Superman is statuesque and powerful. And any villain, or anyone for that matter standing next to Sup should look like a turd. This Cavill, thespian, ain’t Superman material IMHO.
You know Watchmen was visually stunning but the movie sucked ba**s.
    I’m just saying.

    • ringbearer1420

Watchmen didn’t suck balls, ball sucking super hero movies are one like X-Men, Wolverine, and Iron Man, not ones that actually try to tell a store and set up a comic book world.

      • Avenging World

Do not agree with anything else dude has said, but WATCHMEN did suck balls.
        Read book instead.

    • sense 11

      Whatever man, you suck b@lls.

      Watchmen is fucking great!!!

  • Ryan

How have they not cast Tom Welling as superman? After 10 years of Clarke and knowing the character surely he was the perfect choice..

    • Jesse

Because Tom Welling is not a good actor. He is merely passable. I’ve seen the last 3 or 4 seasons (enough to see him ‘grow’) and I can honestly say he is little more than a passable TV actor. Nothing special. To be fair, he hasn’t been given the greatest material, but what else to we have to base it on, Cheaper by the Dozen? Also, to re-invent the franchise they can’t use an actor associated with the brand for the last ten years.

    • sense 11

Fuck Tom Welling aka Superboy, There I said it. Time for the adult superheroes and villains to come out and play.

  • Cathy Brown

I think Tom Welling is as good looking as this guy and would be perfect for the new Superman movie.

  • ringbearer1420

Why not get a huge statuesque guy for once? I would love to see a Alex Ross looking superman, cast up or just keep Routh.

  • junierizzle

I still say they should have just let Singer make his sequel. ANyway, they should do the right thing and make this a new stand alone installment. NO ORIGIN PLEASE!
EVERYONE KNOWS SUPERMAN. Just make a great action flick with a good story.

As if Nolan screwed something up? Are you trying to say weren’t impressed with Batman Begin or TDK? I don’t know what say if so. I don’t like reboots either but Nolan did a damn fine job with the franchise I grew up with.

Use Tom Welling. He has a decade of experience to begin with. Whether you follow the show or not its very clear that Tom Welling has the commanding presence that dually represents that of Clark Kent and Superman. Of course they wont because Znyder’s egotistical vision will have to include his own personal take on what the character of Clark Kent/Superman embodies. After watching what was the historical train wreck that is known as “300″ I’m confident he’ll ruin Superman and for fans that will be twice in the past decade that we’ve been let down. There must be some really pissed off studio execs who hate Superman because it seems whatever decision is made it is made to tarnish his image and ruin it completely. I can’t decide what’s a worse pairing. Singer/Routh or Snyder/Cavill. Maybe stop choosing these “young, hip” directors? Which doesn’t discredit or bash their directing abilities or the quality of their films, I enjoy movies made by both of them. Hopefully I turn out to be wrong. I wished for that last time in 2006 but we know how that ended up. Superman deserves to be shown in his full glory.

    • Cam

You got to be kidding me.

    • turd ferguson

yeah….i don’t think they’re going with tom welling

    • Sparky

I’m sorry, your comment made my brain hurt. You do realize that 300 was an adaptation of a comic book by Frank Miller right? In fact, I have so much confidence in Snyder because of the fact that he is one the only director to get comic book movies done right(the other guy, Nolan, is a producer)! Do more research before you go slamming Snyder.

Also, Welling’s is a good teenage Superman but I don’t think he’d be able to pull off the adult look. I will say though, Henry Cavill kind of looks like a grown up version of Welling in a way.

I like that Snyder broke away from trying to make the actor look like Christopher Reeves.

  • bill

Henry better start working out…looks a little frumpy.

  • Migz13

whoa.. this has been pretty much unexpected. haha:P
out of all the The Dark Knight Rises, Spider-man reboot, Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America and X-Men:first class news, I almost forgot that there’s going to be a Superman reboot:P
hmm.. can’t say much about this guy yet as he is an unknown to most people.
Snyder and co must have seen something special in this dude to cast him as probably the most popular superhero of all.

  • ClarkKent2o6

I am usually more reserved in my criticisms when it comes to movies not yet in the can. I have been a Superman Fan for my entire life. Rather than watch my children be subjected to the vileness that is Pokemon and Yugioh, my kids watch Fleischer Superman, the Superfriends and Justice League Unlimted DVD’s.

Don’t mistake me for the over the top fan that has superman underroos, wallpaper and car decals.

This casting, is wrong. Not due to Nationality, the man is a worthy actor, and was a delight to watch on the Tudors. There is nothing commanding about this man. Superman leads an Army of heroes, and strikes fear in dictators, despots and villains THROUGHOUT THE GALAXY. Whenever a major villain plans to do major bad, they have to account for Superman. Whenever a new Hero puts on the tights… they were inspired by Superman (most of the time).

Cavill, for all of his acting prowess, is a bad fit. He doesn’t bring any of the intangibles that make Supes so great. Does he really look like a guy that Batman would follow into a life and death struggle for the fate of the universe? No, he looks more like a guy stricken with a lifelong case of “Emocitis”.

    • Alex-mansy

Haha, next thing you’ll tell me Routh, Welling and even Reeves had that amount of commanding presence.. Nonsense.

Superman has always been the everymans superhero, not above them. This guy looks tough and commanding enough.

  • portia

Gosh people are a bunch of negative nancy’s. If you have nothing good to say shut your pie hole. Henry is a good actor. How about you give him a chance before running your mouths. Geez

  • jking

the only way this will work is if he puts on about 80 pounds of muscle…….i know that sounds like an exaggeration but im serious. superheroes are exactly that – superhuman. they must look impressive.

  • @@@@

    Christopher Reeve forever!

  • the judge

they should have used tom welling or bring back Brandon.

Superman returns was a fantastic movie. It didnt do well in the box office because people don’t know the history behind superman.

    either way I am excited.

  • sense 11

  • Davis Grant

I was hoping the Dude from True blood or Jon Hamm would get the part but I didn’t even know Cavill was on the short list either way I’m happy. I believe with Nolan as the Godfather, Goyer writing and Snyder at the D. Chair this could be either a real success or a let down (doubtful). Dec 2012.

  • Xman

I dont care whoever take the role the story should be good villain should be strong enough to take the punch of superman and give it back it should be epic and should be shown globally dont keep him in metropolice always and he have to save the world and dont show lex as major villain but as a hater of superman who indirectly helps villains to see superman defeat and die

  • cw

It’s not about nationality. This guy just looks nothing like superman..He’s got a weird nose and looks like a weak sentimental singer from an acoustic band. Superman debuts when he’s over 30 and looks wise and very masculine. This man is just a little girl compared to superman portraited by dc comics.

They are ruining the superman reboot! Thanks to him Superman will never be rebooted.

Eh, who cares? Really, it’s just going to be another Superman movie. Even though he’s been DC’s number one character for like forever, his movies never really were that impressive. I think the best Superman on film were the Max Fleisher war time cartoons. Hollywood should consider doing all super hero movies as animated features. That way we could be sure of always getting our heroes looking exactly like they did in the comic books. Wouldn’t matter who voiced the characters as long as they sounded correct.

  • Sean Kalel

My Goodness. You people don’t know history. For the record, Superman was created Kryptonion yes, but ended up settling in Metropolis which was based off of TORONTO which is in CANADA. That is common knowledge. He was converted to American, standing in front of the American flag yada yada a bit after. Who gives a crap on the nationality of the actor. Ben Kingsley played Ghandi so anything is possible.

  • Jon

Seems okay to me. I’m sure he’ll pack on 30 or so lbs of muscle. Pop in some blue contact lenses and give him a clean shave and he’ll look the part.

Sure he might be a little young looking for the part (depending on the story they are going to tell), but I believe Reeves was 26 in Superman 1 and Brandon Routh was 27.

  • GB

to the idiots who claim Superman is “from the world” and not American, he was raised American with an American accent. Seriously, I realize these fanboys will praise anything that has to do with superheros but get a clue.

That said, a good brit actor can cover his accent – look at Bale as Batman.

  • John Smith

This BUM is Superman? What a horrible choice! This movie is already being rushed. Why not use Brandon Routh????

    Superman is AMERICAN!

    • Carlo Orlando

What’s with the name calling? We all are fans of Superman and a healthy debate about the actor who is portraying is good. But do you have to resort to calling Cavill a bum just because you don’t see him as the man of steel? Come on, the guy can act and we will all see this when the movie comes out. And when I say we ALL go to see the movie, that means you too! Everyone who has made negative remarks about Cavill, his costume and the fact that he’s British, will put the money down for a ticket. I had negative vibes about Superman Returns, but I saw the movie. I gave it a chance. Why don’t we wait and see and give Henry Cavill a chance. And come on, no more name calling. Superman wouldn’t call you names.

    • Alex G.

Give me a break, Tom Welling couldn’t act his way out of a cardboard box.

      • dhaoracle

Sorry dude Tom Welling can act ad most likely better than you can or many other so called actors in the buisiness. You fail to forget that they are constantly trying to reinvent something that is already great as it is because if it wasnt then it wouldn’t have lasted for soo long. Another thing is that Tom Welling is the New Era Superman of 2000s and we all know it. These producers constantly changing actors over and over like they did with the Spiderman reboot is riduculous because “THEY” feel that they should change it for their own desires not the fans or anyone else..

Put Tom Welling as the character he is Christopher Reeves successor and should have been in this movie since hmm well:
-everyone knows him as Superman already
-he has been doing is since forever
-has the Superman persona packed down
-the last show christopher reeves did while passing the torch was to TOM WELLING

Christopher Reeves made this franchise wonderful and anyone who is on here saying that the movies he did was horrible need to go suck on something because u are not real fans whatsoever. Maybe Superman Returns wasnt that good but don’t knock on the classics..

I don’t know who this dude is, but he doesn’t look right for the part. He looks too urban, too city. Clark Kent comes from a small country town and I don’t see that at all in this guy. Superman will be the easy part for him to pull off, because I am assuming most scenes with Superman will action. There is very little acting involved in action scenes. The way Superman looks is on the director and special affects crew they will make the actor playing Superman look good or bad. The more complex character has always been Clark. How this dude pulls off Clark will sell the whole movie to me. I am upset that they didn’t continue with Brandon Roth and Bryan Singer. Superman Returns was really good not great, but it was a great lead off point, even though Singer should not have recycled anything from the Reeves franchise. So are we as the viewing public supposed to just forget that there was a Superman Returns? Hollywood has demonstrated its lack of creativity in mining the comic book story lines too often and when the movie doesn’t gross $500 million in 6 months they (the corporate types) aren’t happy and drop the whole franchise. Or when they don’t work at all like the first Hulk they return to the well too early. Most movies coming out these days are remakes or based on comic books. I hope the new Superman sucks. Hollywood needs to give the public time to want a character again.

Zack career is on line with this guy? He’s no Christian Bale coming off big action film like Equilibrium in 2002. I think Nolan dumped a mess in Zack’s lap. No tom Welling again, A guy that even Christopher Reeve says should play superman. It’s like same thing over again with Singer. I hope Zack can dress allot of special effect around this guy. I like Nolan 2nd Batman, But, he dropped ball with this one. I’ll wait for third reboot. I’ll get to say, I told you so.

    • dhaoracle

Thank You someone finally said it. If the great Christopher Reeves gives you his blessing why not take it and run with the money instead of trying to make everything new age which i can say is fucking up a lot movies right now for no reason at all like that new Spiderman reboot (can suck balls). Or like that Incredible Hulk (that was a good movie with some effects but that actor didnt cut it for me whatsoever and I wished that Eric Bana woul,d have said yes to the film because he was the one of the best Hulks after Lou Ferringo and they replaces him with Norton.

They really need to stop with all of this new age hero stuff and give us what we want and not some fab..
