Millennium Films has released the first trailer for director Renny Harlin’s (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) period actioner Hercules: The Legend Begins and it’s…something.  The film aims to tell the origin story of the titular Hercules (Kellan Lutz), as we follow the character’s quest to claim his one true love, Hebe, who has been promised to his own brother.  The trailer promises a mix of 300 and Gladiator with a dash of supernatural mysticism thrown in for good measure, all done with the quality of a direct-to-DVD genre cash-in or a Spike TV Original Movie.  The effects are rather lacking and Lutz barely says a word throughout the trailer’s 3-minute runtime.  It doesn’t look like Dwayne Johnson and Brett Ratner’s Hercules film has to worry about The Legend Begins stealing its thunder. At all.

Here’s the official synopsis for Hercules: The Legend Begins:

In Ancient Greece 1200 B.C., a queen succumbs to the lust of Zeus to bear a son promised to overthrow the tyrannical rule of the king and restore peace to a land in hardship. But this prince, Hercules, knows nothing of his real identity or his destiny. He desires only one thing: the love of Hebe, Princess of Crete, who has been promised to his own brother. When Hercules learns of his greater purpose, he must choose: to flee with his true love or to fulfill his destiny and become the true hero of his time. The story behind one of the greatest myths is revealed in this action-packed epic - a tale of love, sacrifice and the strength of the human spirit.
