A24 has released the first High Life trailer, offering a glimpse at acclaimed filmmaker Claire Denis’ highly anticipated sci-fi thriller. The film stars Robert Pattinson as a death row inmate who, with his baby daughter, is the last survivor of a dangerous mission to deep space. The film slowly reveals what events transpired to leave Pattinson’s character abandoned and alone, as the crew—made up of death row inmates and a doctor (Juliette Binoche) with sinister motives—has since vanished.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September and garnered mostly positive reviews, although critics warned that this is a very strange movie that delves into concepts of procreation and conception in graphic ways. Denis is a beloved filmmaker and it’s great to see her working within this genre with this kind of cast. Whether that can translate into broad box office success is unclear, but this trailer should turn plenty heads and it continues Pattinson's track record of making wildly fascinating film choices.

Check out the High Life trailer below. Written by Denis, Jean-Pol Fargeau, and Geoff Cox, the film also stars Mia Goth and Andre Benjamin. High Life opens in theaters on April 12th.

Here’s the official synopsis for High Life:

Monte (Robert Pattinson) and his baby daughter are the last survivors of a damned and dangerous mission to deep space. The crew—death-row inmates led by a doctor (Juliette Binoche) with sinister motives—has vanished. As the mystery of what happened onboard the ship is unraveled, father and daughter must rely on each other to survive as they hurtle toward the oblivion of a black hole. A staggering and primal film about love and intimacy, suffused with anguished memories of a lost Earth, High Life is a haunting, thrilling achievement from visionary director Claire Denis.
