New Financier Comes on to HIGHLANDER Reboot; Justin Lin Still Attached; New Screenwriters Announced

     May 16, 2011

RCR Media Group has sent out a press release announcing they’re co-financing the Highlander reboot with Summit Entertainment and Neal Moritz Productions.  For those unfamiliar with the premise, it’s about immortal guys called Highlanders who cut off each other’s heads until only one Highlander remains.  Then he gets a special prize and a Queen song plays.  The press release reports that Fast Five director Justin Lin is still attached, but keep in mind that his plate is filling up with other projects due to the success of Fast Five.  Not only does Universal want to hit the gas on Fast and Furious 6, but Lin is also attached to Terminator 5.  Does he want to make the first great Highlander movie (the original is campy fun, but not a great movie) or does he want to go to a film that’s likelier to succeed like Fast 6 or T5?

The press release also announces that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) wrote the screenplay, but back in February we reported that Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg had been hired to rewrite the script that was originally penned by The Wibberleys (National Treasure) .  Neither Rosenberg nor The Wibberleys are mentioned in the press release, which you can read after the jump.

“the original is campy fun, but not a great movie”

You kinda welcome to go and fuck yourself, dude.

  • Brian

Oh shut the hell up…ALL of you. THIS will be a gigantic mistake…

  • Kevin

Highlander won the academy award for best movie ever made.

  • Jason

FYI, the original is NOT about immortal guys called Highlanders. The immortals are actually culturally and ethnically diverse. For example, Sean Connery’s character was Spanish (don’t ask). The movie is called Highlander because our protagonist happens to be a Scottish Highlander. Yeah, you’re welcome.

  • Dan11774

they r NOT called Highlanders, do some research, or watch the movie maybe….

  • Dan11774

Incredible movie & a cult classic.

    • Alex–

Yes Highlander is a cult film, a good one, that also spawned 3 sequels and a television series.

So it’s about time it’s been remade. But I hope they stray far from the original.

Anyone who doesn’t think immortal guys all over the world who must cut each others heads off over hundreds of years until there is only one, are pansies.

Saying that they are getting Melissa Rosenberg of Twlight fame to write the screenplay. This is gonna suck.

  • Reid Wright

I sincerely hate all this rebooting rubbish that is going on. If they change the theme song i will be beheading some studio execs. Who could possibly play Highlander ?

  • spongefist

Matt, you are wrong, very, very wrong.

The original highlander was not ‘campy fun’ it was perhaps the greatest movie of all time…

and you calling them ‘highlanders’ makes you possibly the greatest twat of all time…

nice work, two monumental wrongs do not make a right, they simply make you a total wanker

  • Darth Squisjy

I hate when jackasses call the immortals Highlanders….He’s from the highlands of Scotland, thus called a highlander moron…I don’t think dude even watched the movie…next he’ll be saying they’re actually aliens from the planet Ziest (god the sequel ranks up there with planet 9 as the worst movie ever made)…i wouldn’t mind a reboot, but it better be a good story or just leave it be…none of the sequels held a candle to the original

  • avrodei

Then he gets a special prize and a Queen song plays… LOL

  • Beaky Smoochies

If there is any 1980′s movie that should be remade, it’s ‘Highlander’. Whilst the original- and there is ONLY one- was a pretty original idea, Russell Mulcahy’s direction has dated badly in the last two decades, plus with the latest visual effects technology, not to mention a (hopefully) fantastic, intelligent, and emotional script, the new ‘Highlander’ could potentially eclipse the original, being a three-hour epic that spans hundreds of years across the globe, with mammoth battle sequences and more personal clashes, and a character-based study of life, loss, immortality, belonging, and ultimately a destiny that will decide the future of mankind. Shoot it in New Zealand or the Czech Republic, with a budget no less than $175m, dump Justin Lin, and get Martin Campbell in the directors chair, oh baby…

    • Chucky

      Yes and yes.

However, I must insist on some role for Sean Connery. Anything. Cameo. Starring. Whatever.

  • Faentur

    1) only the lead character was a highlander. The others were all just immortals of one kind or another.
    2) This movie could use a reboot, for sure… it was great for its time, but it’s badly dated. I agree that the Queen soundtrack needs to be retained (although My Chemical Romance could perhaps do something modern and retain the spirit of the original). I would like to see those amazing transitions from modern day to past scenes retained. though.
    3) A reboot affords Hollywood the opportunity to re-do the entire series, dropping out all the horrible sequel madness and making follow-up stories that live up to the original.

  • Tarek

The film’s tagline is “There can be only one,”. So no need for a remake.

  • Flash-T

Shoot Highlander in New Zealand or Czech Republic? Beaky are you fucking nuts??? Just a thought but why not shoot Highlander, in the Scottish Highlands? You know where they shot Braveheart, Harry Potter, Rob Roy and one more what was it again oh yeah HIGHLANDER! Just one request for this upcoming debacle (cos it will be, face facts) ,can they actualy cast a Scot as MacLeod this time because I nearly lost an ear whilst listening to Lambert murdering my countries accent : )

    • Beaky Smoochies

Hey Flash-T dude, the reason the ‘Highlander’ remake should be shot in either New Zealand or the Czech Republic is because those two countries are highly cost-effective to film in (compared to the United Kingdom), have excellent studios and crew, and would save money as both soundstage and location filming could take place in the same country, leaving moolah to spend on the extensive visual effects. But you’re absolutely correct when you say a proper Scot should play the title role, how about Dougray Scott…? Lastly, I am not, as you suggested “nuts”, the voices in my head assured me of this…

“For those unfamiliar with the premise, it’s about immortal guys called Highlanders who cut off each other’s heads until only one Highlander remains.”
The immortals were not called Highlanders, Christopher Lambert’s character was called the highlander because he was from a clan from the highlands of Scottland.
Also (the original is campy fun, but not a great movie).
Go F your self Matt Goldberg.

“It’s about immortal guys called Highlanders”? And all you had to do is Google it.. Apart from that, do you really believe that ANY of those films you mentioned was half as good as the original Highlander? That movie was an underrated piece of art; the music, the flashbacks, the skill of presenting the very basic and commonplace idea of immortality in perfect moderation. Only a true artist could make so ancient a concept feel so entirely new and original. No sir, regarding that film I’ll take exception to your comment.
