Hilary Swank to Produce and Star in Comic Adaptation SHRAPNEL

     July 20, 2011

Hilary Swank is attached to produce and star in Shrapnel, an adaptation of the Radical comic of the same name.  Variety hears Swank has long sought a “strong action vehicle,” and finally found it in this story of a former military officer who leads a revolt on Venus in the year 2250.  (Sidebar: never get involved in a land war on Venus.)  Radical Pictures has signed Toby Wagstaff to adapt the graphic novel trilogy written by Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman.  The property was recently turned into an iPhone game, and will soon be a multiplayer game courtesy of Zombie Studios.  Several “top directors” are reportedly circling the film adaptation, though Variety mentions no names.

Hit the jump for quotes from the producers (including Swank) and the official comic synopsis.

hilary-swank-imageRadical president Barry Levine boasted about Swank’s involvement:

“Hilary came to Radical excited to find a project with a strong female protagonist that could show off her abilities to do action films.  With Hilary being an actors actor, Shrapnel will give a whole new definition to that type of role.”

Swank confirmed the feminist appeal of the project:

“I am a fan of the work that Barry Levine and Radical Pictures are doing in the comic and action arena. Shrapnel and specifically the character of Sam offer me the opportunity to dive into an exciting character with many layers and depth that are rarely found in this genre.”

The official synopsis for the first comic, Shrapnel: Arteria Rising:

Venus, 2250. After five years of war, the last free colony in the Solar System is about to fall. Unknown to the attacking Marines—or even the colonists themselves—the most infamous heroine of the war has gone into hiding in exile on their planet. Now she must organize a revolt against the very Marines she once fought alongside and lead the colonists to freedom.

Sounds like a neat idea, and a great showcase for the right actress.  At this moment, I wish I were fonder of Ms. Swank.

“At this moment, I wish I were fonder of Ms. Swank.”

My thoughts exactly. Those Oscars don’t make her any easier to look at for 2 hours at a stretch.

    • Tone

      Great t!ts, though.

      • Dogg

Heh, so it’s all a matter of camera angle. Problem solved.

      • The Train!

great t!ts indeed. actually, i think she’s hot but i can see why not all straight guys think so.

    • Drop the S

You gay?? She puts the wank in Swank!

This film could rock, though setting a war on a gas giant planet would take one helluh pair of boots.

      • Huh?

        Um…Venus isn’t a gas giant. It’s just a smidge smaller than Earth.

      • Tarek

        No. Venus is a razor.

“never get involved in a land war on Venus.”

Only slightly less well-known than “never go in against a Martian when death is on the line.”
