Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.  The film is a continuation of the story that began with last year’s An Unexpected Journey, and this trailer gives us a pretty extensive peek at what’s in store for the second installment in Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy.  In addition to the return of Orlando Bloom‘s Legolas, we get a look at the new characters played by Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel), Lee Pace (Thranduil), and Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman), as well as a nice tease of the titular dragon Smaug.  I may be misremembering just how CG-heavy An Unexpected Journey was, but there appears to be a rather exhaustive use of the technology here in Smaug.  Hopefully some of the more spotty-looking shots can be cleaned up in time for December, when audiences will once again be given the opportunity to see The Hobbit at 48 frames-per-second.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and click here to check out 8 high-resolution images from the pic.  The film also stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Michael Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Ken Stott, and Aidan Turner.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in 2D, 3D, IMAX, and HFR on December 13th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

With modern amazing CGI they can’t make a dragon look any better than Dragonheart did.

lol that’s the first thing I thought of, it looked like Dragonheart. Can’t say I’m surprised, the first film looked like a shiny cartoon and was boring as hell. LOTR must have been an anomaly for Jackson.

      • Joey Patterson

“an anomaly??” Obviously you haven’t seen any of Jackson’s films prior to LOTR.

Please tell me this is unfinished CGI and they’re gonna work more on it … Why did they show Smaug at all ?

    • Unique Jenique

IDK. But the CGI does look a little wonky. I hope they edit it too.

    • Diaz

I am hoping it is unfinished CGI because it looked way too shiny and almost too colorful for the world they are in. I know it’s not LOTR but the color palatte was much more subdued in those movies… I’m gonna try to trust the process here and hope it will be great!

      • Nmaster

maybe thats intentional. By LOTR most of the elves are gone or have left, whilst sauron rises, slowly infecting middle earth – dulling the colors of the world…

  • T2

And I “Jizz, in my pants”!!!!

    • Joe

Don’t worry. There are cures for premature ejac.

  • Pk

    I’m surprised they showed smaug

Guys, a note on the CGI. Desolation of Smaug is 6 months away from release. Jackson and team are now in post-production.

In the last Hobbit film, of which I had no problems with the CGI, finished it’s post-production mere DAYS – mere hours – before the premiere in Wellington, New Zealand. The work on the CGI is ongoing, and I have no fear that it will be up to usual peerless Jackson standards.

I would like a few miniatures, though.

It looks so cartoonish though, just like the first film. With LOTR things felt real, it felt fantastical but achievable, now it looks like what I see in saturday morning cartoons.

      • peter

woah what kind of cartoons you watch that look this great?

You mean that he’s ending the post-production of this part and starting the job on the third. It’s sure as hell that most of the stuff from this trailer will end up in the final product.

      • Nerdgasm

Nope. You must not know how editing works. they have deadlines to put out trailers by the company so they will render those to the best of their abillity. but EVEN then when they have finished the rilm they still have to render that which will up the grade quality of the look of the film. so chances are very good that these will be touched up. They won’t start working on the third until this is in the can – that’s why they have reshoots scheduled for each move AFTER the previous has opened….learn more before speaking.

Glad they didn’t COMPLETELY spoil Smaug in this trailer. I have a feeling the full trailer will show more of him, though. I really hope they save him for the movie.

Looks like a lot of this trailer was to showcase more intentional use of 3D for the sake of 3D. Seriously, even though it’ll be a little more than a decade older, LotR will still look more mature than this. Not sure why Jackson relied so heavily on CG this time, when he made, quite possibly, the best use of practical effects during LotR. Maybe there just wasn’t the pre-production ramp up this time, I dunno.

Solid orange eyes with no detail? WTF? Looks like a cut scene from a ’94 video game. After all that build up, THIS is the first glimpse we get of Smaug? Somebody’s placeholder graphics?

  • Jamesy

I haven’t seen the Hobbit yet, just because I didn’t get the same buzz I got from seeing the LOTR trailers, but was that CGI orks I seen? Why has Jackson relied so heavily on cgi this time, it takes away the magic and in this day and age you’d think they could make Smaug look less like something from Dragonheart, I actually think I PREFER Dragonheart.

  • Pointy Ears

    Fuck Yeah!

  • Hop

I love the more human and dwarfish elements of the story.

Some bad fx and compositing here!!! I would normally put it down to them rushing out a trailer with unfinished fx just so they can tag it onto Man of steel on friday.

But, judging by the stampede scene in King Kong, and a few dodgy LOTR shots, this might be it! Which (as a fan of the first Hobbit) is not good! It looks gawdy too, but maybe thats due to them filming super bright for the 48 frames.
