My grandfather had a saying.  He said, “Matt, never roll out an image of all thirteen dwarves who accompanied Bilbo Baggins on the Quest of Erebor, when you can roll them out piecemeal and create greater awareness for The Hobbit.”  I was the strangest piece of wisdom I’ve ever received, but now it’s starting to make sense.  We’ve shown the dwarven brothers Nori, Ori, and Dori, and the dwarves Oin and Gloin (also brothers), and now its time for another set of dwarf bros: Fili (Dean O’Gorman) and Kili (Aidan Turner).

Hit the jump to check out the image and to learn more about Fili and Kili.  The Hobbit also stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, James Nesbitt, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Andy Serkis.  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.  The Hobbit: There and Back Again will hit theaters on December 13, 2013.  Both movies will be in 3D.

Here’s a brief rundown on Fili and Kili:

Dean O’Gorman as Fili and Aidan Turner as Kili in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” Two of the youngest dwarves, Fili and Kili have been born into the royal line of Durin and raised under the stern guardianship of their uncle, Thorin Oakensheild. Neither has ever travelled far, nor ever seen the fabled Dwarf City of Erebor. For both, the journey to the Lonely Mountain represents adventure and excitement. Skilled fighters, both brothers set off on their adventure armed with the invincible courage of youth, neither being able to imagine the fate which lies before them. (Photo by James Fisher)

I love that not all of the Dwarves look like Gimli

  • M&M

My confidence in PJ is starting to wane a little bit…

  • zootcatchy

    kili doesn’t look like a dwarf >_>

    • Wladi

Totally agree…I’m not saying that all dwarves must look exactly like Gimli but Kili looks more like a human than a dwarf…look at Fili, looks like a young dwarf should be…an example doing a good job with Middle Earth races r the hobbits, all of them have curly hair and resemble each other, none of them look like a tiny human or an little elf…

      • zootcatchy

yes! kili is way too light-framed and has an elven face! also he should be blonde like his brother.
fili is a fine example of young and handsome dwarf.

I’m with Ryan on this one…it’s cool that not all of the Dwarves have to be “stout”.

Why can’t there be any lithe or gaunt dwarves? I mean, Americans are fat as a people, but there are some of us who don’t resemble Dom Deluise.

    • zootcatchy

why are you comparing real humans to dwarves from a fantasy story?

      • Tarek

and who told you that all the dwarves from the J.R.R Tolkien universe looks like a barrel ?

      • zootcatchy

Dwarves are described as SHORTER and STOCKIER than Elves and Men, able to withstand both heat and cold. Though they are mortal, Dwarves have an average lifespan of 250 years. (c) A Guide to Tolkien, David Day, Chancellor Press, 2002

In appearance their more distinctive characteristic was their BEARD which they HAVE FROM THE BEGINNING OF THEIR LVES, male and females alike; and which they SHAVE ONLY IN SHAME. (c) J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien (ed.), The War of the Jewels, “Part Two. The Later Quenta Silmarillion: Concerning the Dwarves (Chapter 13)

-> Kili doesn’t look like a dwarf at all!

  • Hermanni

Fili is ok but Kili is looking like fucking BARD!

    • zootcatchy

he looks like a half-sized elf!!

  • sense 11

See George Lucas, see how the design for the prequels matches the original. Douch. Not one more of my cents will you be getting

I remember hating this book when i was forced to read it my freshman year of high school. The other 3 books translated well to the big screen so I have high hope for these 2 movies. Tolkien just describes everything in way too much detail. I have seen grass before so I don’t need him to tell me about the grass.

Look more like dorks than Dwarves. Starting to have doubts about the Hobbit.

  • GOJIRA

Not as impressed with the Dwarves in this pic, and underwhelmed in general. Gimli set the benchmark, but these look nothing like the Dwarves I had hoped for. I wanted to see short stubby viking types that looked like they had done a days hard graft. These pair look fresh out the nail salon. Not impressed yet. Though the film will be good I know.

Hmm…they are so completely not how I pictured them that it’s a little shocking. None of the movies do justice to the books, of course, but these two are a bit much (or perhaps a bit less?) . “Youth” is a relative term when applied to Tolkien’s dwarves, and while F&K were the youngest dwarves in the party, I never imagined them looking quite so callow…

  • fdjafdjslkj

COOL :). Love that not all dwarves look the same.

  • Marisol

Are you certain they aren’t playing dwarven women? ;D

  • London Tomlin

Pretty bad casting here … These guys look like they’d be more at home holding surfboards than swords. Fili and Kili’s totally bogus journey dude!

  • Pjfangrl

Wow the hot dwarves have arrived finally. Like that they don’t all look like barrels. Haven’t read the hobbit and not planning to either. Did however read Lord of the rings and understood why changes had to be made. Will be looking forward to this.
