Just after The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’s director Peter Jackson talked about the creature design of the dragon Smaug in this interview, it looks as if we’ve got our first (brief and blurry) glimpse of the beast. Two new TV spots landed recently: one features a new bit of dialogue between Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and Gollum (Andy Serkis), the other features a bit of the destruction caused by the fire-breather. Smaug, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, is expected to appear briefly in the first film and should feature heavily in the second, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Also starring Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen and Hugo Weaving, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens December 14th. Hit the jump to check out the new TV spots.

The news of Smaug’s first appearance comes courtesy of Fanhattan. Check out both videos below:

Here’s the synopsis for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey:

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Am sorry but this movie looks silly as hell
Will wait for the DVD in the bargain bin at Walmart.

You’ve obviously never seen The Lord of The Rings. You’d probably be at the bargain bin of bitches for sale so you can clean peoples assess for them.

don’t be sorry, quality story telling based upon great literature (you remember books, i’m sure) isn’t for everyone.

Haha, yes, the books are good. The movies… not so much.

and had i finished reading your comment first…. “bargain bin of bitches for sale so you can clean peoples assess for them”…. dear god…. i am deeply sorry to Lob Taylor for my laziness (especially after bringing up reading, total dick move in retrospect…. Efren is clearly riding the short bus… and not to mince words, he might actually be retarded, or drunk… or both.

Zomg Smaug at :04! That means he has to be in “An Unexpected Journey,” otherwise it’s false advertising! There’s no way they’ll get to his destruction of Esgaroth, so that’s gotta be a flashback of him annihilating Dale and taking the Lonely Mountain.

Wtf is that battle at :20? There’s no way they’ll get to the Battle of the Five Armies, but maybe it’s a scene leading up to it cuz the goblins travel far from multiple regions and would’ve probly encountered men while mobilizing.

that’s Gandalf approaching Dol Guldur at the end! And there’s been footage of the White Council, so maybe a lot of the first film will cover the conflict with ze Necromancer

And them eagles lookin SO awesome at :19… HOLY SHIIIIIIT
