The first TV spot has gone online for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It’s a quick thirty-second bit that shows some of the scenes and scenery that have previously been released, but we get two bits of dialogue: one with Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and one with Thorin (Richard Armitage) who both happen to be picking on poor Bilbo (Martin Freeman).
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey also stars Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and Andy Serkis. It opens in 3D on December 14th. Hit the jump to watch the first TV spot.

Here’s the synopsis for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey:
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Still not sure why this movie was necessary except to gouge out peoples wallets.
way too many characters I can hardly keep track of the names .
that’s why they need three movies, so you can get to know their names, birthdays, turn ons, turn offs, etc.
It’s “necessary” not to gouge people’s wallets (you win an award for stupidity) but because people have been asking for it ever since the original trilogy finished. This has been a nearly 10 year saga of people asking when it’s happening, legal battles over rights, fights with the estate of JRR Tolkien and a myriad of directing and casting woes. This first of three films looks amazing, and this TV spot had me as soon as it opened with the first line in the book.
It is the prequel to the trilogy, a book in and of itself that has been round for over 50 years, just like Lord of the Rings…this film deserved to be made and I couldn’t be happier.
You probably didnt read the books…. or care about the TLOTR saga
Who cares? A Storm of Swords is coming…
