The Simpsons is still plenty capable of putting together a very entertaining half hour over two decades into its run, and this Sunday’s episode “Stealing First Base” was particularly suited for film geeks.  First, the episode’s delightfully gruesome “Itchy & Scratchy” short serve as an extended parody of the Philip Glass-scored Koyaanisqatsi as well as a brief mocking of 3D.  Later, a Bart kiss inspired a montage of famous romantic scenes in film history–including Spider-Man, WALL·E, Planet of the Apes, and Star Trek among others–which itself was a take on a reminiscent scene in Cinema Paradiso in borrowing Ennio Morricone’s beautiful “Love Theme” from the film.

In order, these are the films and television series included in the kiss montage:

-From Here to Eternity: the famous beach kiss between Burt Lancaster and Debra Kerr
-Gone with the Wind: Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh
-The Quiet Man: John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara
-The Lady and the Tramp: a piece of spaghetti unites the star-crossed dogs
-Planet of the Apes: Charlton Heston and an ape-makeupped Kim Hunter
-On Golden Pond: Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn
-Ghost: the pottery scene with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore
-Spider-Man: the upside-down rainy kiss between Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst
-Star Trek: Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) in the list’s first alien kiss
-Beauty and the Beast(TV series): Linda Hamilton and a beast-makeupped Ron Perlman
-
The Public Enemy: James Cagney shoves a grapefruit into Mae Clark’s face
-WALL·E: EVE and WALL·E touch their robot heads together and create a spark in outer space
-Alien³: Sigourney Weaver and mini-Alien
-The Godfather: Part II: Fredo (John Cazale) broke brother Michael’s (Al Pacino) heart, thus a vigorous Italian kiss
-All in the Family (TV series): Sammy Davis Jr. kisses lovable racist Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor) on the cheek

Onelinereview has a great side-by-side rundown of stills that compare the Simpsons version to the original for each film.

..and I'll be seeing that episode in december (if lucky) — I live in South America and even though they dub the episodes maybe a couple weeks later than the original show date, they take a while -a long while- to show them down here..
