Warner Bros. UK has released a new international trailer for Anne Flectcher’s (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip) buddy cop comedy, Hot Pursuit. The film follows an uptight cop (Reese Witherspoon) who is tasked with protecting vivacious widow of a drug kingpin (Sofia Vergara) as they hit the road, on the run from criminals and crooked cops.
The new trailer hits a lot of the same beats as the previous one, but it’s just a little less funny, making me worry that the appeal of the first trailer may have been a trick of editing. Witherspoon and Vergara are both accomplished comedic actresses and they seem to have a nice chemistry, so I’m going to continue to give this film the benefit of the doubt. Check out the new trailer below. The film also stars Robert Kazinsky, Mike Birbiglia, and John Carrol Lynch and opens in theaters on May 8th.

The Witherspoon-as-Bieber gag got a pretty good laugh out of me – she sells it. That’s what Hot Pursuit really has going for it, two A-list professional comedic actresses who know how to commit. But, as we’ve seen with countless comedic flops, that’s not always enough. Fletcher’s The Proposal is an underrated, delightful comedy; one of those movies I always get stuck watching when I catch it on TNT. The director had a skill for playing up Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds’ individual comedic strengths and combined chemistry. Hopefully, Fletcher can employ that skill with Hot Pursuit, and highlight the talent and charisma Vergara and Witherspoon bring to the table. As someone who enjoyed The Heat infinitely more than expected, I’d love to see another female-led buddy comedy connect with audiences.
What do you guys think? Do you like the chemistry between Vergara and Witherspoon? Sound off in the comments.
