This Season of HOUSE M.D. Will Be the Last

After much speculation, the producers of House M.D. have finally come to a smart decision. The current eighth season of the medical drama series starring Hugh Laurie will be the last. With Lisa Edelstein opting not to come back this season, the writing was on the wall for Dr. Gregory House to end his practice, and now it’s official. While the show certainly should come to an end at this point, this season has been surprisingly decent, especially with new cast members like Charlyne Yi and Odette Annable. The most recent episode, a departure from the show’s usual formula, was one of the best of the season, and while the writers certainly still have some fight left in them, it’s time to give House and his team a respectful exit. Does that mean we’ll see some old faces stop by for a clean wrap up? We’ll have to wait and see. Hit the jump for a heartfelt thanks and farewell from producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and Hugh Laurie, as well as a statement from Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

house__season_5_-_poster_Here’s the full goodbye press release:

After much deliberation, the producers of House M.D. have decided that this season of the show, the 8th, should be the last.  By April this year they will have completed 177 episodes, which is about 175 more than anyone expected back in 2004.

The decision to end the show now, or ever, is a painful one, as it risks putting asunder hundreds of close friendships that have developed over the last eight years – but also because the show itself has been a source of great pride to everyone involved.

Since it began, House has aspired to offer a coherent and satisfying world in which everlasting human questions of ethics and emotion, logic and truth, could be examined, played out, and occasionally answered.  This sounds like fancy talk, but it really isn’t.  House has, in its time, intrigued audiences around the world in vast numbers, and has shown that there is a strong appetite for television drama that relies on more than prettiness or gun play.

But now that time is drawing to a close.  The producers have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature;  he should never be the last one to leave the party.  How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air.

The producers can never sufficiently express their gratitude to the hundreds of dedicated artists and technicians who have given so generously of their energy and talent to make House the show it has been – and perhaps will continue to be for some time, on one cable network or another.

The makers of House would also like to thank Fox Broadcasting and Universal Television for supporting the show with patience, imagination and large quantities of good taste.  The Studio-As-Evil-Adversary is one of the many clichés that House has managed to avoid, and for that the cast and crew are deeply grateful.

Lastly, the audience:  some have come and some have gone, obviously.  This is to be expected in the life of any show.  But over the course of the last eight years, the producers of House have felt immensely honored to be the subject of such close attention by an intelligent, discriminating, humane and thoughtful – not to mention numerous – audience.  Even the show’s detractors have been flattering in their way.  Making the show has felt like a lively and passionate discussion about as many different subjects as could possibly be raised in 177 hours.  The devotion and generosity of our viewers has been marvelous to behold.

So, finally, everyone at House will bid farewell to the audience and to each other with more than a few tears, but also with a deep feeling of gratitude for the grand adventure they have been privileged to enjoy for the last eight years.  If the show lives on somewhere, with somebody, as a fond memory, then that is a precious feat, of which we will always be proud.

Everybody Lies.

This Is The Most Saddest TV News So Far. One Of The Greatest Shows and Characters On TV. You Will Be Missed House,James,Chase,Foreman,Taub,Cameron,Thirteen,Cuddy,Adams,Park and Masters :(

It’s still a good show. But it’s way too formulaic and, to be honest, it’s getting hard to watch House (the character). They’ve made him such an awful and miserable person, it’s gotten hard to care about him. Unlike characters like Jack Bauer or the people on the Lost island, I don’t know if I think Gregory House deserves a happy ending. I almost think the proper end of the show should be him dead in a gutter.

I don’t agree with your ideas about ending the character of House ‘dead in a gutter’, but the show is dead in a gutter this season with the addition of the two new female actors who can’t act. The Asian woman is annoying to listen to and doesn’t seem like someone who would be such a large part in a quality production. The other woman simply can’t act. The regular cast seems subdued and distracted, lifeless. The show appeared to be at its end from the beginning of this season.

Thats a shame. I understand things have to end and i guess this is as good a time as any but i will miss it. And with the loss of 13( Olivia Wilde)from the show ill miss looking at Dr Adams (Odette Annable). Great show. Even if it did run a little long.

What? This season will be their “last season” again? Good grief! How many last seasons can one show have?

Thank you for stopping the torture.

Did you consider not watching it? Prior to this season I found the show to be witty, smart, well acted and directed. I looked forward to watching it…until this current season.

Why, why did this show have to end? I use to watch it with my dad before he passed away of cancer a few months ago. We didn’t have a strong bond, but this was one of the things that we did like to do together, watch house. Now that this is gone, i’m completely torn… I wish there was something I/we could do to get this show to not end.
