Two houses are about to get trashed again – one by a party and another by popcorn. The Hollywood Cog over at Pajiba is reporting that remakes of the 1985 film Real Genius and 1990′s House Party are currently in development. Columbia Pictures and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment have the Real Genius remake under their banner while Brett Ratner’s Rat Entertainment and New Line Cinema are overseeing the House Party reboot. For more hit the jump:
Real Genius was a cold war satire featuring Val Kilmer and a pack of genius misfits who develop a laser that’s stolen by William Atherton and the U.S. Government. Best known for Kilmer’s over the top performance, pink bunny slippers and its use of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule the World” in the popcorn-infused finale, it made just under $13 million at the box office according to Box Office Mojo but has since become something of an ’80s classic
House Party, on the other hand, wasn’t about subtext. It was simply a vehicle for then-famous rappers Kid ‘N Play who get mixed up in some high school party shenanigans. It pulled in over $26 million, spawned two sequels and a served as a hilarious punchline in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. No word yet on any talent attached to these developing projects.

I wish they really WERE the “lastest.”
This is whickety whickety whack.
Why House Party? Are there two hot rappers out there that I'm not aware of? House Party was decent, but the 2 sequels left me rather meh.
Real Genius. Kilmer was sarcastic, cynical, and smooth as Eff. Not to mention did some great deadpan delivery. I think any other attempt would be feeble at best. Some of these 80's flicks really should be left the hell alone. I can't stop the trend, and I sure as hell can't stop Hollywood and their efforts to remake everything I've ever seen as a kid.
Of course, if this trend continues, then I'll be seeing you in 2029 for the Avatar remake.
