Columbia Pictures has released the first trailer for James L. Brooks’ How Do You Know, a romantic comedy led by an impressive cast of Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Jack Nicholson, and Kathryn Hahn.  The film centers on a love triangle between a professional baseball player (Wilson), a white collar executive (Rudd), and the object of their affection (Witherspoon).  Check out the trailer after the jump.

Few men have quite the track record of Brooks, both in film (Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, As Good as It Gets) and television (Mary Tyler Moore, Taxi, The Simpsons).  Given that Brooks averages one film every five years as a director, many saw 2004′s Spanglish as a bit of a letdown, so it will be interesting to see how How Do You Know plays as a follow-up.

Likewise, the romantic triangle at the center of the film invites comparisons to Broadcast News, where:

  • Paul Rudd = Albert Brooks
  • Owen Wilson = William Hurt
  • Reese Witherspoon = Holly Hunter

I can buy that — really like Rudd as the 2010 Albert Brooks. Although, Hurt has four more Oscar nominations than Wilson ever will.

How Do You Know opens December 17th.  Click over to Yahoo! for HD.

  1. You may want to proofread your posting here Brendan. Not to belittle the talents of James Nicholson… but I'm pretty sure that's Jack.

  2. Yes, that and John Hurt was the British actor from Alien and scores of others, not William Hurt (who has four nominations, including one win, the better to dis on poor Owen Wilson with…unless you predict Owen will end up with two noms one of these days)

  3. Honest to god…..I feel like I hold back on this site so much because ridiculous mistakes are made like this……”John” Hurt in Broadcase News? Really? I know this is going to get taken down within minutes of its posting, I just want to remind you that you get paid to write on an actual movie website. I dunno….maybe go to IMDB if you're not sure….anything other than posting something like that.

  4. Also, Brendan, yes, Im jealous i work at a shitty customer service job and you get to write on a movie website, but c'mon ma. At least know what you're doing if you're going to write something literally anyone in the world with an internet could potentially read. Think about that dude. Your favorite movies probably have directors that rhyme with skypel hay.
