The How I Met Your Mother spinoff is officially a thing. We learned last month that CBS was eyeing the prospect of a female-centric comedy spinoff of the long-running series, and now TV Line reports that the network has ordered a pilot for How I Met Your Dad. HIMYM creators/executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are behind this potential new series alongside Emily Spivey (Up All Night), and the idea is to follow a relationship from a female point of view. HIMYD will revolve around a new set of characters and is described as a “kindred spirit” of the original series, but Bays was quick to point out on Twitter that they will not be introducing these new characters in the final episodes of HIMYM, noting “this will be its own, totally new show.”
Creatively, the current final season of How I Met Your Mother has not exactly been firing on all cylinders, but maybe How I Met Your Dad will have enough fresh creative juice to take off. One imagines we’ll also see some connective tissue between the shows, like the utilization of MacLaren’s bar or occasional appearances by Ranjit.
