New Trailer and Poster for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

     April 10, 2014

DreamWorks Animation has released a new How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer and poster.  Director Dean Deblois’ animated sequel takes place five years after the first installment, as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are exploring new territories while the rest of their friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  This trailer has the blend of humor and drama I was hoping the movie would provide, and I’m surprised and encouraged that they’re leaning more heavily on the emotional side than the comedy even though the jokes are still funny.  The first How to Train Your Dragon set a high bar.  The sequel could very well meet it.

Here’s the official synopsis for How to Train Your Dragon 2:

The thrilling second chapter of the epic HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON trilogy brings us back to the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years after the two have successfully united dragons and vikings on the island of Berk. While Astrid, Snoutlout and the rest of the gang are challenging each other to dragon races (the island’s new favorite contact sport), the now inseparable pair journey through the skies, charting unmapped territories and exploring new worlds. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Now, Hiccup and Toothless must unite to stand up for what they believe while recognizing that only together do they have the power to change the future of both men and dragons.

After Shrek 1 & 2 this was the only other film from Dreamworks animation that was great. All the rest were just good (Kung Fu Panda) to decent (Bee movie). This was their only film though that actually measured up to Pixar in terms of animation and story telling. Hoping the sequel lives up to it’s predecessor as none of the other animation studios are even close to competing w Pixar.

Good grief if I hear one more Pixar comparison…
Just let them do their thing, would you? It’s apples and oranges you’re comparing.

You do know the story behind Dreamworks Animation correct (Antz vs. A Bugs Life)? So comparing the two is appropriate as Pixar is still under the Disney banner. Pixar’s the gold standard to live up to in terms of quality and story telling in the animation dept. I don’t want them to be “kid friendly” as Pixar but as engaging as they are with their films. I’m glad Dreamworks is more edgy w their material but sometimes some of their films just seem lazy and unoriginal, especially since they’ve teamed up w Fox.

Fucking fantastic. :) But the music in the background was a weird choice. Then again I remember that owl movie doing the same.

But you can’t deny that music is fucking awesome!

  • Charlie Brownie

I’m just wondering why it has the same music featured in Legends of The Guardians which ironically also has flying.

    • Snarky

      It’s coincidental, not ironic.

I’m really looking foward to watch this, but I feel they gave too much away about the plot. However, I’ll definitely go to see it because I absolutely loved the first one. I can’t wait to listen to John Powell’s score.
