In his last partnership with Lionsgate before shipping off to Paramount, Tyler Perry came so close to winning out the box office. But never underestimate those Toothless stans. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World topped the box office in its second weekend with $30 million, soaring past Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral's $27 million.

It's not entirely terrible news for Perry and his long-running character. A Madea Family Funeral's debut haul is the fourth best in the ten-movie franchise, only landing behind Madea Goes to Jail ($41 million), Madea's Family Reunion ($30 million), and Boo! A Madea Halloween ($28.5 million). The film's $27 million take is also far above initial expectations, which had the comedy coming in around $20 million.

Meanwhile, in a distant third, there is Robert Rodriguez's Alita: Battle Angel, which whipped up another $7 million in its third weekend. It's been mighty slow going for the James Cameron-produced manga adaptation at the domestic box office, where the film has now grossed $72 million. But keep an eye on that foreign box office if you're hoping for a sequel; after this weekend, Alita has totaled a pretty stellar $350 million worldwide thanks to $278 million overseas.

No such good news for Greta. Director Neil Jordan's stalker thriller—in which the great Isabelle Huppert does the stalking across from Chloë Grace Moretz—tallied a mere $4.5 million in its debut weekend, good enough for eighth place. Three spots above it is Green Book in its sixteenth weekend, buoyed by its Best Picture Oscar win to the tune of another $4.7 million.

Overall, it's been a pretty sludgy 2019 at the box office so far; How to Train Your Dragon 3 is still the best opening of the year with its good-but-not-mindblowing $55 million. But next weekend the box office gets a Marvel-sized injection. Check out the weekend's top 10 estimates below, and be back here next week to see just how higher, further, faster Captain Marvel can fly.
