Ladies and gentlemen, it looks like The Wolverine is back on track. After Darren Aronofsky dropped out as director, and natural disasters ravaged Japan (the desired shooting location) it looked like Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel might be delayed for quite some time. After an extensive director search, James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) was hired to helm the project, and now speaking with Toronto radio station CHFI (via The Playlist), Jackman stated that filming will commence this October:

“We shoot in October, so it will probably come out a year after that. That’s usually around the timeline.”

So not only is the film shooting this year, it may even hit theaters in 2012. Jackman also told the radio station that director Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) big-budget musical adaptation of Les Miserables won’t shoot until next year. Hit the jump for more.

It’s still unknown whether the plan remains to shoot on location in Japan, where Christopher McQuarrie’s script takes place. When Jackman gave an update in March, he said it was still too early to tell regarding the Japan situation. While the actor sounds hopeful, I’d be surprised if The Wolverine actually makes a 2012 release date, given that it’s most likely fairly VFX-heavy. I’d much rather Mangold and Fox take their time to make the film right, rather than rushing a less-than-great version of The Wolverine just to get it into theaters next year.

Jackman signed on to Les Miserables earlier this month, and he’s poised to take on the role of Jean Valjean, with Paul Bettany in negotiations to play the nefarious Javert. Hooper is coming off of a Best Director and Best Picture win with The King’s Speech, so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles a large-scale musical.

  1. No way will Fox release a film like Wolverine in a month which isn’t during the summer season. They’ll hold it off til 2013 and release it somewhere in that summer season.

  2. October would be a luxury schedule compared to what “X-Men: First Class” had and that turned out OK. I think it would be on schedule for Summer 2012.

  3. I’m in agreement with Hugh. I think they should take their time and make it the movie he wants it to be, and the movie his fans are expecting. In the meantime, we still have “Real Steel” coming out in October!! Waiting anxiously!! Les Miserables!!! YES!!! You GO Hugh-Man!!!

  4. This is good news. I actually liked X-Men Origins, as a cheesy action flick, and I’m hoping this film can do some justice to the Wolverine comics. If Silver Samurai is a prominent character and Daken is born at the end, that would be the best thing ever.

  5. I would rather they take their time to do this right, but I fear Fox were determined to replace Aronofsky as soon as possible PRECISELY so they could get this thing shot and released in summer 2012, I hope to be proved wrong- have it be the first big summer movie of 2013- but then again, it is Fox we’re talking about here…

    • Fox went with a director (Mangold) they know is capable of churning out yet another safe and generic popcorn flick.

  6. Re-watched X-Men yesterday. Made me realise how redundant this film is. Unfortunately, I feel that this franchise has been plummed for all it’s worth.

  7. Great news.

    I hope this will great.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was awful with the characters because Deadpool was made to be look like Barakra from Mortal Kombat and Gambit only appeared in the movie for 5 minutes.

The timeline was confusing, you didn’t know if this was a prequel because it looked like it was based in the modern day.

X-Men: First Class is the best comic book movie of the year, it was great with the characters, the timeline and the effects were great.

It was based in 60′s but it was still great.

The director did a great job, the best X-Men movie so far.

  8. Damn, I hope sequel isn’t as good as its predecessor, I couldn’t handle yet another round of epicness.

  9. Gambit didn’t belong in the wolverine film to begin with, but it worked out fine. I know that marketing R rated films is difficult, and not always successful for this genre ( Watchmen), but it should have been a good deal more violent, the hardest pg13 possible at least. this was pretty disappointing, they didn’t have to tie to the x-men films quite so much, and the unnecessary cameos didn’t impress me. the whole deadpool debacle is probably the worst. Iron Man, Spider-man, and the first two X-men films were able to catch the excitement and spirit of the comics without being so ridiculous. I don’t mind changing the beloved cannon if it make sense and a good story. Wolverine just doesn’t deliver like the other superhero films. Hopefully this new one has a better story, the story in japan and the alpha flight/introduction to the x-men would be a good direction. (maybe the segue into alpha flight/x-men although it would contradict the first x-men movie.)

  10. hell yeah with magnold on board THE WOLVERINE is gonna be way better than the first simply because the story was fucked up completely but i liked it none the less
