When Darren Aronofsky abruptly left the director’s chair for Fox’s upcoming sequel The Wolverine, fans were left disappointed and wondering if the film would still start production soon. Then, the devastating tsunami/earthquake and consequential fallout in Japan cast even further doubt on the project given its purported samurai storyline, with filming being planned to take place in Japan. Coming Soon caught up with the actor at CinemaCon and Jackman gave an update on the project as to where everything stands:

“We need to find another director and once we’ve found that, we’ll be able to know. It’s too early to call on Japan, I’m not sure where they’re at, so now we’re finding another director, but Fox is very anxious to make the movie and we’re moving ahead full steam to find another director.”

This echos producer Lauren Shuler Donner’s statements the other day, where she seemed optimistic about the project as well saying “We have the great Christopher McQuarrie writing and it’s very true to the Japanese saga.” It sounds like everyone’s just taking some time to regroup, and once they find a director everything will move forward. However, this delay puts the shooting schedule of filming this year a little in doubt given Jackman’s busy schedule.

they’ll find a director. while searching they can see if the story needs anymore work. what they should do is find some very visionary or competent new directors (i.e. ones who need a shot or recently graduated film students etc.).

I really don’t want to sound like a troll here, but just about every hope I had for this movie left with Aronofsky. Origins was just so awful that it kinda killed my interest in the franchise. The only way I’d see myself getting back on board here is if they choose an equally visionary mind to helm, i.e. Nicolas Winding Refn. More than likely though they’ll probably go the direction of somebody more Brett Ratner-esque. Ugh. Such a sad state of affairs for such a cool actor playing such a great character.

Uh, actually the tsunami, earthquake and fallout happened before Aronofsky dropped out. If anything, people just weren’t thinking about the effects of the disaster on filming Wolverine beforehand (and rightfully so) because there are bigger things at stake. The point being that Aronofsky’s departure wasn’t the lynchpin, it was the final nail in the coffin of promise.
