Hugh Jackman Promises WOLVERINE 2 Will Be “Very Different”

With word that acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky is set to direct the sequel to the atrocious X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it’s time to turn our attention over to analyzing what we can expect from the follow-up. Hugh Jackman, on site last night at Elton John’s Enduring Vision gala, gave Vulture the latest scoop on the project. “This is, hopefully for me, going to be out of the box. It’s going to be the best one, I hope,” he said, and then paused. “Well, I would say that, but I really do feel that, and I feel this is going to be very different.”
Jackman also doesn’t feel that the typically dark Aronofsky will clash with the comic book material stating, “”This is Wolverine. This is not Popeye. He’s kind of dark. But, you know, this is a change of pace. Chris McQuarrie, who wrote The Usual Suspects, has written the script, so that’ll give you a good clue. [Aronofsky’s] going to make it fantastic. There’s going to be some meat on the bones. There will be something to think about as you leave the theater, for sure.” Does that mean we can expect something more akin to The Dark Knight? Hit the jump for more.
The film, tentatively titled Wolverine 2, is slated to begin production in March. Although Aronofsky, who is known for such greats as 1998’s Pi, 2000’s Requiem for a Dream and 2008’s The Wrestler, has yet to officially sign onto the project, sources say that the deal is close to being finalized.
I’m mixed on this whole scenario. While I worship the ground Aronofsky walks on, my worry is that the studio will impact his vision. Up until now, Aronofsky has more or less done what he wanted to do, but after a disastrous production on X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which included extensive reshoots, and reports of director Richard Donner overstepping director Gavin Hood, one wonders just how much leeway 20th Century Fox is willing to give the acclaimed director, whose next film Black Swan is set for release in December.
There’s no denying that Aronofsky will bring his unique vision to the table. And having worked with Jackman before on 2006’s The Fountain (another underrated gem), I can only imagine the chemistry between the two will have meaningful results. But again, 20th Century Fox has a shady track record with the X:Men franchise, which reached a high note with Bryan Singer’s X2: X-Men United (2003), but then fell off the deep end with the disappointing Brett Ratner follow-up X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). Still, the studio at least seems to be trying to make amends by pegging Aronofsky and Kick Ass director Matthew Vaugn, who is currently deep into production on X-Men: First Class due next year, to push the mutant franchise in the right direction.
Either way, Jackman is stoked for the sequel and has already begun bulking up for the role.
“Expect to see four chicken breasts and a whole pile of steamed broccoli on my plate,” he said last night. “I’m starting; I’m having my six meals a day.” He concluded by assuring fans that Wolverine 2 will not be a “usual” X-Men movie. One can hope, right?

no matter how good it is isn’t still a sequel to a terrible movie? Or is this more of a reboot like xmen first class with the same actor? Cause even if it’s the shit, i don’t know if there’s enough steel wool in the entire known universe to scrub my brain of those goddamned adamantium bullets
This isn’t a reboot, this a sequal.
well i guess it couldn’t be any worse than the original
Maybe it’s going to be so good people will erase the first one from their minds, as if it never existed. I think that’s exactly what Fox is aiming for.
Your comments are interesting. Even though I really didn’t like any of the Wolverine movies, maybe I will watch the next one!
There’s only been one Wolverine movie. Though it did suck.
FOX NEEDS 2 BACKOFF! Honestly if it weren’t for Avatar or the original Star Wars trilogy, I wouldn’t give one shit about Fox, they need 2 let Aronofsky do his thing!
I hope they turn this thing around. Aronofsky and Jackman deserve better for their efforts. I’m really hoping this will have a strong heartbeat and some BITCH ASS KICKIN ACTION!
If not…well…forget it. LOlz!
Hell no. All broccoli in the world couldn’t resurrect this franchise.
Hahaha!
Somehow, I’m thinking Aronovsky won’t be keen on simply calling it Wolverine 2.
He’s certainly never does a sequel before. And w/ such a radical departure, one hopes
they attempt to not only re-boot the franchise but re-launch the character.
The film should just be called: “Weapon X” or “Logan”.
Or even “Bite me, Fanboy.”
If Aronofsky is directing I hope this means the film will have a Wolverine more like the one in the comics. Hugh Jackman is a charismatic and great actor but his Wolverine has been a friendly pussycat over the previous four films. The only time he really felt like the comic book Wolverine was at a few moments in X-MEN 2, primarily when the school was invaded.
If Aronofsky is allowed to make a hard PG-13 (if the Dark Knight can get away with what it did in 2008 then Aronofsky should have some freedom) and Fox just stays out of his way I might finally be WAITING to see an X-Men film.
So glad you mentioned The Fountain. Amazing film. I cannot think of another director that so completely portrayed and communicated awe.
Real awe, not the overused, redundant use of the word that floods the world nowadays, belittling it’s true meaning.
Wolverine 2 could be truly awesome.
I would rather watch X3 or Origins, over Kick Ass, any day of the week. Vaughn is an overrated hack (cough* Stardust *cough).
Why do people insist on using the word hack so much these days? “Stardust” was an enjoyable film – not a great one, mind you, but an enjoyable one. “Layer Cake” and “Kick Ass” were great films. I’m not sure what you mean by hack here – Vaughn has more or less crafted his films to meet his vision – not the studio’s. If he were a “hack” in your usage of the word (I’m guessing), “Kick Ass” would have been PG-13 and “Layer Cake” would never have been made. Plus he would have made “X3″, which he passed up due to creative differences with the studio. He only took on the new X-Men flick because Fox has given him complete creative control. Don’t be so bitter.
Agreed , i actually enjoyed Origins as well as his interaction with his brother sabretooth , i thought the way they portrayed the whole adamantium surgery was well done and i also enjoyed gambits appearance as well as young emma frost and cyclops . Ryan reynolds part as deadpool was alot of fun and so was that final fight scene. Its the whole reason there is going to be a deadpool movie. I dont know why everyone badmouths this movie honestly. It did everything it was supposed to do. Maybe the only thing i didnt like was the casting of Will.I am, he seemed out of place. Also i loved the opening montage of wolverine and his brother taking part in all of the countries wars. That was awesome ! well at least it was better than Brett Ratners attempt , Gavin Hood Didnt do a bad job at all.
No. Just no. Read a comic book.
