Today we have our first images of child stars Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield in adorable period costume on the set of Hugo Cabret.  The film — adapted from Brian Selznick’s tale of an orphan boy caught up in a world of magic and adventure — marks director Martin Scorsese’s first venture into the cinematic world of 3D.  Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, and Christopher Lee also star.  Check out the images after the jump.

Hugo Cabret hits theaters on December 9, 2011.  Here’s the official synopsis:

Hugo Cabret, Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D, tells the tale of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station.   When Hugo encounters a broken machine, an eccentric girl, and the cold, reserved man who runs the toy shop, he is caught up in a magical, mysterious adventure that could put all of his secrets in jeopardy.

The cream of the crop is below, but you can check out the whole set at Zimbio [via /Film].

Warning: the smile depicted in the following photo has melted four out of every seven hearts of those who have laid eyes on it.

And for good measure, here’s a snapshot of the legendary director.

This does seem to be a bit of an odd turn for him, but I have yet to see a film of his that doesn't deliver.

are you guys talking about Scorcese's smile?

No, that one shook the hearts of 4 out of 7 people (and caused them to go into cardiac arrest).

Asa Butterfield looks like Alfalfa! It will be interesting to see a movie like this; I'm looking forward to it though, it'll be a nice step from away from Scorsese's usual work.

The book that this is based on is great. I can definitely see why Scorsese is interested. If you are a lover of classic film, I recommend that you read it.

Uh oh, Mr. Scorsese is looking concerned, I wonder if the film isn't going to be all that good. Oh, no that's just his face.
