A slew of new images from the highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games have gone online. Iâve been extremely pleased with all the trailers thus far, and I canât wait to see how director Gary Ross takes on the material. I think heâs assembled a terrific cast and the book should make for quite an entertaining moviegoing experience. For the uninitiated, The Hunger Games takes place in the post-apocalyptic country of Panem. As a means of reminding Panemâs 12 districts that the countryâs government holds all the power, one teenage boy and one teenage girl are randomly selected from each district to participate in a televised fight to the death called âThe Hunger Games.â If youâre wary of spoilers, these new images only seem to be from the first half of the movie. Most of them are from the scenes that take place in the Capitol (complete with the kooky-lookin’ futuristic costumes and Josh Hutcherson‘s Peeta practicing his camouflage), with a few looks at Katnissâs life in District 12.
Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland. The Hunger Games opens on March 23rd. [Update: We’ve added three more images after the jump.]
Hereâs the synopsis for The Hunger Games:
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which âTributesâ must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If sheâs ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobsonâs Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collinsâ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following.
