We’re nearly a month into 2015, but the dust has yet to settle on the 2014 domestic box office.  The final standings are near, though, and it looks like, for the second year in a row, Katniss will reign supreme.  The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 has now grossed $333.18 million at the domestic box office, officially topping the $333.17 million grossed by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy to become the highest grossing domestic release of last year.

This wasn’t altogether surprising.  Given that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was the highest grossing release of 2013, many were expecting the franchise to repeat in 2014.  Funny enough, the film that Catching Fire eclipsed for the title was also a Marvel release: Iron Man 3.  Not to worry, though.  Marvel has the #2 and #3 titles this year, as Captain America: The Winter Soldier follows fairly close behind with $259.76 million domestically (that Guardians gross is damn impressive, though).

guardians-of-the-galaxy-star-lord-draxYou have to go all the way to the #15 release, Interstellar, to find a wholly original film, though I’d also count The LEGO Movie as an original movie given that it only took a very, very basic nugget of source material to begin with—and that movie holds the #4 spot with $257.7 million.

Expect Mockingjay – Part 1’s gross to climb a bit more over the coming weeks before it officially closes.  You can see the entire Top 10 domestic grosses of 2014 below, though expect The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies to climb as well since it is also still playing in a number of theaters across the country.
