The marketing campaign seems to be ramping up for Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games, as some specific posters [Update: A spokesperson for the film have told us these are "seals", not "posters"; we were confused because they're shaped like posters] have cropped up for a number of districts. For those unfamiliar, the story centers on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman who must survive a televised fight to the death between her and teenagers from other the other districts of Panem. In the dystopian world of the novel, what used to be North America is now called Panem, and it’s divided up into 12 districts. Each district produces a specific good for the nation (lumber, grain, mining, etc.) and these posters represent said districts. Katniss, our hero, is from the much-pitied District 12.

Hit the jump to see the posters. The film also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland star.  The Hunger Games opens on March 23, 2012.

The posters popped up on various Facebook pages created specifically for each district. To visit the specific page, go to facebook.com/district2pn, with your desired district number substituted for the “2.” The posters also demand the onlooker to “Like your district immediately” so this seems to be part of the viral campaign for the film. Like away!

Here’s the official synopsis for The Hunger Games:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

I hope the producers are ready for a massive disappointment when this thing (or things) hit theaters. The books aren’t nearly as popular as they seem to think they are, are terribly written (seriously, Twilight level writing) and practically void of characters or depth. In short, this ain’t Harry Potter.

Don’t they realize when they over-hype these things it only turns people off who might have otherwise been happy to ‘discover’ them? I look at these posters and laugh; there’s no descriptions of these areas in the books, and they’re only barely mentioned. This franchise has ZERO depth, zero characters, and it’s going to show onscreen.

I see your point because Twilight has been such a failure as a movie series …

It depends a lot on the screenwriters … The books are quite popular … i think i am the only one in my large circle of friends who hasn’t read them. They are sitting on my kindle right now as my next books to read.

There is nothing wrong with the way the Twilight series was written. They had a very solid storyline and fairly interesting characters. They are goofy from the angle of vampires sparkling in sunlight, the fake werewolves, and the male characters being written with female emotions.

Everything depends on the writing, directing, and acting … just like every movie.
