Sorry Philip Morris, somebody really doesn’t love you. I Love You Phillip Morris, a dark comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, which had its premiere way back at Sundance 2009 was scheduled to be released this month. Now, the LA Times is reporting that Consolidated Pictures Group has delayed it indefinitely.

Based on a true story, Carrey stars as con artist who falls in love with his prison cellmate, Phillip Morris, played by McGregor. It’s written and directed by Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. After premiering at Sundance, the film played Cannes and was scheduled to be released on March 26, before being bumped to April 30. Now, it has no date at all.

After the jump, check out the trailer for the film and read why I think this – pretty darn great – film finds itself sitting on a shelf.

Late last year at a small Los Angeles theater, I was lucky enough to catch a screening of I Love You Phillip Morris. I walked in knowing very little except that buzz was negative because of the delays and that Carrey and McGregor played lovers. The film blew me away. After an awkward start, it begins to find its legs and evolve into a beautiful true love story mixed with an almost unbelievable string of cons. Think Catch Me If You Can meets Brokeback Mountain with the result being a romantic comedy. It is from the Bad Santa guys after all. The twists and turns are fantastic and, at the end of the film, I raved about to to all my friends – assuring them they’d be able to see it in early 2010.

When the film had trouble getting a distributor out of Sundance in 2009, many people surely assumed it was because of the subject matter. In the LA Times report, they seem to suggest that because I Love You Phillip Morris was being released by a super independent distributor, money might have been the issue. It really and truly has to be. Several films in recent years have proved that America is beginning to embrace overtly gay subject matter (Milk won two Oscars after all, and Brokeback won 3, just to name a few). Plus, the core elements – a love story rolled into a confidence game – are totally mainstream.

But maybe you just don’t get that out of the trailer. And maybe it truly is impossible for independent distributors to play with the big boys. Check this out and then let us know what you think.

This actually does look good, minus the uncomfortable kissing I think this movie actually feels like a GOOD gay film. Most of them are pretty trashy, I wasn't a big fan of Milk (and certainly didn't find it to be worthy of Oscars), Brokeback Mountain was alright. But this movie seems genuine, and extremely funny.

I am a near-homophobe but loved Milk (yes, I think it deserved the Oscars), haven't seen Brokeback, and this looks GREAT! I would see this in a heartbeat! Kissing I can take but I never want to see any love-scenes beyond that – not between two men. Yuck! :)
It has been released here in Norway. Today in fact. Not sure why America didn't work out but it is very sad. Hopefully they can make their money back with DVD sales? Man I hope so.

Delayed? here in the UK it has already shown on cinemas. Why not USA where it was made?
witing for dvd, but i wanna see it. And i agree with nightavatar, kissing i can tolerate, but no further please. 2 men being in love with eachother i can understand, but whacking it up the wrong-un is still a dirty habit i find.

Isn't it being delayed because unlike Brokeback Mountain and MILK this film doesn't skimp the sexual relations between two men? I haven't seen the film (of course…) but I've heard that some of the early sex scenes are pretty graphic man on man. Brokeback had a short “shoot everything so you can vaguely tell what's going on” sex scene and MILK just skipped out on sex altogether, any man on man action was more snuggling. Movie distributors are now ok with some man on man snuggling and kissing but anything more than that and it's a no-go. Which is a bit hypocritical since a movie like “Jennifer's Body” can get a 3,000 screen release no problem with the marketing even flat out stating “That bitch from Transformers makes out with a girl!”
Which is a shame. This looks like a funny film and one I've been wanting to see for a while. Sex doesn't bother me. It's sex. Male/female. Female/Female. Male/Male. Whatever. As long as it's consensual and no one is hurt (unless if that's their thing) then it's A-Ok.

It looks great. It should be released right away. Both Carrey and McGregor come across as convincing in their rolls. Why not try it out in Europe first if the distributors have cold feet? By the way, I disagree with the comments below on Milk and Brokeback mountain was more than alright. Both are good examples of good films where gay is not necessarily the main topic, they are just good stories, one historic and one a beautiful romance between two people. Happy both made the main stream.
