Ice-Cube-Friday-Sequel-interview

Last fall, we learned that New Line was in talks with Ice Cube to write, produce and star in a fourth installment of the Friday franchise. The 1995 film spawned two sequels: Next Friday and Friday After Next, and kicked off the acting career of Chris Tucker. The actor all but dropped out of the spotlight following Rush Hour 3, but has recently returned to acting with a role in David O. Russell’s upcoming The Silver Linings Playbook. When news of another Friday movie broke, word was that Cube was interested in having Tucker reprise his character of Smokey from the first film.

Steve got to speak with Cube at the 21 Jump Street press junket this morning in New York City, and Cube gave a brief update on the next Friday sequel and addressed whether or not he thinks Tucker will return. Additionally, as he recently directed an entry in ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, the multi-talented performer talked about the prospect of directing more often in the future. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

friday-movie-imageWhen asked if there was any movement on another Friday, Cube confirmed that things are definitely moving forward:

“There’s a lot of movement. I’m writing the script right now, so we worked out a deal with New Line. The ball is rolling. We invited everybody back and we’ll have a fun movie.”

When asked if he thinks he’ll get Tucker to return to the series, Cube replied, “I hope so.” I think it’d be really great to see Cube and Tucker back together onscreen. Tucker only appeared in the first Friday over 15 years ago, so it’d be fun to see where Smokey is now. It sounds like he’s currently waiting to hear who will and won’t be back while he works on the script, so hopefully deals get finalized soon so things can move further toward production.

Steve also asked Cube if he has any other directorial projects in the works:

“Yeah it’s always in the works. I gotta find pet projects, things that I’m really into. If not, I’ll just produce. If I find something that I just know I have to do, then I’ll direct.”

It’s nice to hear that he’s being picky about what he chooses to direct. When word first broke that another Friday was in development, the report suggested that Cube may also be in line to possibly direct the film. He probably won’t commit either way until the script and storyline are both worked out, but it’d be cool to see him step behind the director’s chair on this one given that he’s been so integral to the franchise as a whole. You can watch the portion of Steve’s interview where he and Cube talk about another Friday below, and be sure to look out for their full interview closer to the release of 21 Jump Street.
