Idris Elba to Play Blade or Luke Cage?

     October 5, 2010

Idris Elba, best known for his role in The Wire, will appear as Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. However, his role within the Marvel properties might not end there. While promoting his upcoming film Legacy at the Raindance Film Festival, Elba dropped some hints as to whom he might play in the future, and they sound like great choices. Hit the jump for full quotes and where those properties stand in terms of rights.

idris_elba_01While speaking with Total Film during the festival, Elba said that his role in Thor wouldn’t be his last, as he has signed a picture deal with Marvel. When quizzed about who he would like to play, given the choice of the Marvel catalog, he mentioned Blade with a smirk that was echoed with laughter from his manager.

“’But erm, there’s a couple of things there that they have… Luke Cage is… very interesting.”

Yes, Idris, Luke Cage is very interesting. While I wouldn’t mind Elba playing all three characters, the likelihood of using the same actor for all of them is doubtful. For one, it would be confusing to the general audience. Additionally, it would mean that he would really tie himself into shooting three different properties, and Elba seems to keep busy shooting other films.

Luke Cage is particularly interesting because Marvel has stated in the past that they are looking to move forward with smaller films and that opens the possibility of an R-rated feature. Low budget means lower financial risk, which translates to a higher likelihood of making something gritty and dark with no limitations. While Blade immediately springs to mind because of the ratings it was allowed in the past, that isn’t a new property.

By now, audiences know Blade. They don’t know Luke Cage, and having Idris Elba in the middle of it would help bring credibility to the role and get a lot of people interested. However, if he ends up playing Blade, that wouldn’t be a bad choice either. At this point, Marvel seems to have ownership of both properties. So, what do you think? Elba as Cage would be effin’ awesome.

But him in The Avengers as Luke Cage. Bring on Power Man! Hero For Hire!

Am I the only one disturbed with Marvel’s trend of using the same actor for different roles? Even though Fantastic Four was released by a Fox, Chris Evans as Cap is still a slap nonetheless. Now Elba as a character in Thor followed by another character released by the same studio…all taken place within the same universe….

I hope he does Luke Cage. It’s hard for me to picture anybody but Snipes as Blade. He did that character so well. Too bad Goyer f’d up the last film with his direct to DVD directing skills.

    • Cordell

Goyer destroyed Blade with the last film, absolutely garbage filmmaking

  • Bogie

I think Blade has run it’s course and the Vampire craze is dying out seeing as how Let me in tanked at the box office. I think Cage would be the better choice but isn’t he a little old for the part?

    • Bill Graham

I don’t think LET ME IN is a good marker for the popularity of vampires. TRUE BLOOD is still a big success, and the next Twilight will rake in a ton of cash as well. Hell, the parody film Vampires Suck made a decent amount of money as well. LET ME IN is a drama that is low on vampire action and high on character development and story, which is NOT an easy sell.

  • Cbtaylo

Maybe I am mistaken but Luke Cage seems like a role he would have to get buffed up to play

    • Bill Graham

You aren’t mistaken, though as is the case with almost all of these heroes, they are drawn with different physiques by different artists.

Great actor but it’s just like taking the it actor and throwing him at every role. He’s Heimdall, now it’s time to take one of the myriad of black actors who are underused and neglected and give them a shot.
Which leads me to this sentiment; if Michael Hai White isn’t their too choice what the hell is with marvel and it’s consistent blind courting of big time actors.
    White is Luke Cage.
However, Elba would be a great blade. It’s with a different studio and Blade’s world would never cross the Avengers. Elba looks like he could be involved with the occult.

    • Bill Graham

Ahhh, Michael Jai White is a complete and utter badass. I would love to see him play any of the Marvel characters available.

  • omegared812

He should play Black Panther. He has the accent and the regal stature to pull it off.

    • Bill Graham

He certainly is regal enough for Black Panther. I just don’t know if that character is feasible because it doesn’t intermingle well with any larger or smaller staple characters.

Iron Fist and Luke Cage are a nice combination. And they tie into possible future Avengers films.

  • poopnoop

He was originally who I saw as Cage but now he’s Heimdall. We can’t have him being Heimdall and Cage. I was hoping Micheal Jai White would be Cage now.

Idris as Blade? He has the look, but come on. Wesley (Snipes) made Blade what it is. The only other actor who could do Blade is Michael Jai White
