Idris Elba (Thor, The Wire) is an actor I’m glad to see in virtually any role. His presence is the only reason I was able to endure 2009′s thriller Obsessed and he is perhaps the number one reason why 2007′s This Christmas has been adopted into my annual holiday fare (yeah, I really just referenced both of those films in the same sentence). While I may be alone in my devotion to This Christmas, it seems as if I’m not the only one who likes seeing Elba land roles as TheWrap reports that Legendary Pictures wants the actor for Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi project Pacific Rim. In case your memory escapes you, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam and is a monster flick set within two worlds. Back in March, we laid out some potential plot elements from the film and we now know that Travis Beacham’s script will see humans take on alien invaders by piloting giant robots (or “mecha”). When you potentially combine del Toro, Elba, and giant robotic constructs, you may as well just go ahead and deduct the box office dollars directly from my bank account.
In addition to possibly taking on Pacific Rim, Elba is also rumored to be in contention to play the namesake in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. He is currently filming Ridley Scott’s Prometheus alongside Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender and has a starring role in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance with Nicolas Cage. Those films are due out June 8th and February 17th, 2012 respectively.

holy crap this guy is freaking everywhere now.
the plot almost sounds like EVANGELION type of stuff.
Haha too true… I just now read that previous article about the potential pacific rim plot synopsis and the first thing that popped into my mind was “man, this gives me a real Evangelion vibe.” Speaking of which, whatever happened to THAT movie? I remember they announced that an Evangelion movie was on the fast track during some film festival 8 or so years ago… WETA workshop was doing all sorts of pre-production work but everything and then it just disappeared.
So alien-clobberin’ mecha is what del Toro is doing instead of Mountains of Madness? Ugh.
This article doesn’t even touch on how epic this film sounds. Here’s the synopsis:
“The first is an alternate version of Earth in the near future, decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first kaiju, a towering Godzilla-like beast, emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. The second is “The Anteverse,” another universe on the other side of that gaping portal, 5 miles below our ocean’s surface.
Since the first attack, the rim has been “spitting out” a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the “Jaeger” program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry.
The central character is Raleigh Antrobus, 23, a skilled Jaeger pilot still wrestling emotionally with the loss of his co-pilot and biological brother, Yance, during a mission a year earlier. The ordeal has wreaked havoc on his mind spirit, leaving him with ghostly nightmares of the battle from the shared “pons” experience. After the initial setup, the damaged hero is recruited to re-join the task force in Tokyo, where pilots are in demand, and team with a fellow “leftover,” 22-year-old female Japanese pilot Mako Mori. Naturally, the language barrier (among other things) presents an issue for the out-of-sync duo, meaning an even steeper learning curve for the unprecedented pairing.
Meanwhile, Felicity “Flick” Kincaid, a journalist and Yance’s former fiancée, circles the globe (ours) to discover answers about this mysterious rift and the origins of its intensifying threat.”
It doesn’t sound like “ugh” to me.
Even though it wasn’t a ‘leading’ role, I thought his part in Rock N’ Rolla was an excellent addition.
