Daniel Radcliffe Is a White Supremacist in the First ‘Imperium’ Trailer

You’ve seen him as the Boy Who Lived, a paranormal investigator, a horned demon, and most recently as a bloated corpse, but now Daniel Radcliffe will become a rather unexpected character: that of a White Supremacist. That’s as controversial a role to take on as ever and, as shocking as it might be to see Harry Potter turn into a Skinhead, it’s admirable to see Radcliffe continuing to take chances in his career.

However, as it’s revealed rather quickly in the first trailer for Daniel Ragussis’ Imperium, Radcliffe’s character is actually Nate Foster, an undercover FBI agent who infiltrates a gang of White Supremacists in order to prevent a domestic terror attack. Radcliffe’s unsteady accent aside, it’s jarring to see him step into this mode, undercover or not. And yet, in this first glimpse, we don’t get to see whether or not he convincingly channels the rage and rhetoric of Edward Norton’s Neo Nazi from American History X

And here’s the synopsis for Imperium:

Nate Foster (Daniel Radcliffe), a young, idealistic FBI agent, goes undercover to take down a radical right-wing terrorist group. The bright up-and-coming analyst must confront the challenge of sticking to a new identity while maintaining his real principles as he navigates the dangerous underworld of white supremacy. Inspired by real events, IMPERIUM stars Daniel Radcliffe, Toni Collette, Tracy Letts, with Nestor Carbonell, Burn Gorman and Sam Trammell and will be released by Lionsgate Premiere in theaters and On Demand August 19.

The trailer’s biggest hook is what we’ve already talked about: Radcliffe taking on a controversial and uncharacteristic role. I definitely got the sense that Nate Foster reluctantly went along with this plan but it never quite feels as if he’s convinced the folks he’s supposed to be infiltrating, as evidenced by the odd yet ominous scene revealed at the end of the trailer. I’ll need a little more intrigue before I put this one on my watch-list.
