Timeline Infographic for INCEPTION

by Matt Goldberg    Posted:July 27th, 2010 at 10:55 am

I wouldn’t say that Christopher Nolan’s Inception is necessarily a confusing movie as much as it’s one that demands your full attention.  But even then, visual aids are helpful.  New Jersey based 3D modeler “~dehahs” has drawn up a “timeline” of Inception.  People who have seen the movie can probably guess what that means, but I don’t want to ruin anything for those that haven’t.

Hit the jump to check out the graphic and if you haven’t seen Inception yet, what’s the hold up?

The image comes via Last Exit to Nowhere’s twitter feed.  The reason I put “timeline” in quotes is that, as you can see, it’s not so much a timeline as it is a time-sandwich.  Click on the image to see it in high-resolution.

Good concept, almost plays out like a board game.. hmm.
Don't pass the last Kick, Don't collect your Totem, Go straight to Limbo.

    end of line

I'll go see Inception when it hits the second run theatre. $3 vs. $11 just to be able to throw commentary back in discussions involving the most hyped movie of the season… Inception can wait.

Honestly I saw it and fell asleep.

Not because I was bored but it was 12 in the morning and I was dead tired.

But the hour or so I caught of it at the end I liked, I have to watch it again.

Droncz92, did you watch it on your computer, or was it a midnight showing? AICN founder/critic Harry Knowles also admitted to falling asleep during it the first time he saw it because he had been running on very little sleep. I can imagine having trouble concentrating on all of the details if I were really tired going into it, but it's not the kind of movie that has long lulls that put the viewer to sleep. Most film buffs seem to have trouble falling asleep or stopping a movie once they've started it. I'm simply surprised that I've now read about two people (including you) that have fallen asleep during this movie. This reminds me of when I saw There Will Be Blood about two weeks before its release, and the screening started at midnight, and the woman sitting next to me slept the entire movie. It's not exactly a movie I'd want to see at midnight for my first time seeing it, yet it's such an engaging movie that I couldn't have fallen asleep if I wanted to. The same thing happened when I saw Fellowship at midnight, though my friends had already seen it and were falling asleep. Anyway, I've seen Inception two times at an IMAX theater, and I was just as thrilled by it the second time as the first time. I was actually quite surprised how absorbed in the movie I was the second time. I may even see it a third time, though I will wait until it's nearing the end of its theatrical run.

Yeah it was just that it was so late, I had gotten off a 8 hour work shift at 930pm and thought it would be a great idea to catch the late show.

I've been really excited for it though, I'll see it again.

I think it's funny and ironic that people could fall ASLEEP in a movie about being, well, asleep. Maybe it's some kind of deep psychological suggestion…

its wrong tho, what says cobb's dream is limbo, its jst filled with things he left behind as he was there before

  8. pills26 @

thought “Cobb's Dream” is Limbo, which is why Fisher is down there, and so is Saiko – I mean, Ariadne distinctly said to Cobb, before she took the kick, that he has to find Saiko, who's out there somewhere.
Apart from that mistake, quite a nice looking graphic.

Also, on the sleeping note, I've never been able to sleep through a movie, but I was amazed when I saw Revenge of the Sith and my mate kept nodding off. I mean, I get that it's a bad movie, but what about all those damn explosions and the pounding John Williams score?

i fell asleep during return of the sith.. during the final fight scene. granted, i was tired, but still, if the fight scene can't keep me awake, something terribly wrong w/ it.

that timeline is f***** awesome…in other words. i think it is very creative and well did. i haven't watched the movie YET, but reading the synopsis and then going through the timeline made me post this comment to give dehahs, who created it some props. it's pretty awesome and basically gives you the whole movie right there in his construction. i like it……I also believe he was high as f*** when he did it. but who am I to judge another man. I'm just an american soldier in iraq. wanna get home so i can watch inception.

Heh heh, Yusuf's cutout figure is wetting itself!

Great timeline except for the “Cobb's Dream” blunder that pills pointed out. Also, didn't Cobb explicitly tell Ariadne that Layer 3(Snow Mountains) was FISCHER'S sub-conscious? So how is it “Eames' Dream”? Unless “sub-conscious” and “dream” don't have to belong to the same person to make a layer, but I don't think so. And wasn't Fischer killed on Layer 3, not in “Cobb's Dream”?

I still have some major confusion though. If Kick 2 represents Fischer being brought back by Eames, a special kick designed only for Fischer as he was killed on Layer 3, doesn't Saito require a similarly special kick as he too expired on Layer 3? I mean, if a person dies on a particular level NOT during the synchronized kicks, that person needs a special kick on that level(shock administered to his/her body) to revive him/her back on that level? So didn't Saito's body need similar treatment on Layer 3? Could somebody please explain to me the difference between Saito and Fischer's conditions on Layer 3 and Limbo?

The difference between Fisher and Saiko is that Fisher needs to get back to the 3rd Layer in order to talk to his father and open the safe before he rides the main kicks to reality.

For Saiko there is no time limit or any specific layer he needed to get back to. Cobbs just had to find him in limbo and kill him to get back to reality… whether that really happened though is up to you. Personally, I say it did.

I believe the hospital was Eames dream and Fischer filled it with his sub-conscious
Ariadne thought that Cobb was destroying Fischers parts of his mind but it was only his sub-conscious he was destroying

    As for Limbo
It's my understanding that Fischer returned to layer 3 because that was the next destination in the layer of dreams and for Saito, the only place to go when awakening from limbo was reality Just as Cobb had returned his wife from limbo

Also, Cobb and Ariadne know that they'll be able to find Fisher to give him the kick up to Level 3 because Mal took him with her. As for Saiko, they had no idea where he'd be in Limbo.

Okay so just to confirm, if Cobb and Saito killed themselves in Limbo, they would have directly returned to reality without having to ride the synchronized kicks up through the different levels like the others, right? And they obviously missed the kicks as they were still asleep on Layer 1 (inside the van) when everybody else had already woken up and swam ashore. So if you miss the kicks when stuck in Limbo, you will directly return to reality when you kill yourself, right?

if you go to an AMC theater before noon movies are $5

    THIS INFORGRAPH IS WRONG.
There was no “Cobb's Dream” it was all limbo, and the falling was NOT a kick, it was the death required to get out of limbo.

  18. ayekat @

I must say that Monkeyhelpertrainer’s and Nona’s comments made it all clear to me.

    Nevertheless, cool graph!

    Oh no, wait:
That doesn’t make sense to me: That means that Saito and Fisher (and Mal?) fall into the Limbo because they were *killed* on layer 3, but Cobb and Ariadne get there by *falling asleep*?
