First INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Promo Art Promises Planetary Destruction

     June 9, 2015

Steve’s currently roaming the halls of the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, snapping shots of everything from the costumes and vehicles of Warner Bros.’ Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to the latest and greatest movie posters. It’s that latter category from which this offering comes. Remember when we brought you the first synopsis of Roland Emmerich’s follow-up film to Independence Day? The one that promised us pissed-off aliens and an Earth on the brink of destruction? Yeah, well the promotional art for the film picks up that idea and runs with it.

This isn’t an official poster from the Fox marketing department, and may not even be anywhere close to the final version that’s released to tie-in directly to the movie, but is instead a piece of promo material that’s being pushed at the Licensing Expo. That said, it’s our first idea of what the marketing for the film might look like.

As a reminder/teaser, here’s the official synopsis for the sequel, which explains a bit of what’s going on in the first look at Independence Day 2‘s promotional artwork:

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

And here’s another hi-res version:

So either the aliens have returned to suck up all of humanity through that pretty light beam (not likely) or they’re back with a vengeance and have brought along their powerful world-destroying ship to punch a hole straight through to Earth’s core. Something tells me we’re going to need more than a clever hacker and a smart-ass pilot to bring that sucker down.

Opening in theaters on June 24, 2016, Independence Day 2 stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, Joey King, Sela Ward, Brent Spiner, Vivica A. FoxWilliam Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Judd Hirsch.
