Will Smith isn’t returning for Independence Day 2, but Jeff Goldblum is and now he’s got another ID vet joining him. Director Roland Emmerich just tweeted that Vivica A. Fox is officially locked to return for the sequel. She played Jasmine Dubrow in the 1996 original, a single mother and exotic dancer who opts out of giving the aliens a warm welcome and instead makes it to Area 51 and marries Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) before he heads off to whoop E.T.’s ass.

Now the cast includes Fox, Goldblum as David Levinson, Liam Hemsworth as the son-in-law of Bill Pullman‘s President Thomas J. Whitmore and Jessie Usher as “the son of Smith’s character,” which presumably means he’s playing his step-son Dylan Dubrow, the role played by Ross Bagley in the original film. It looked like Dylan, Jasmine and her dolphin ring would live happily ever after with Captain Hiller so now that the sequel is such a family affair, it’ll be interesting to see how they work around Smith’s absence. And then of course we’re still waiting for the official confirmation on Pullman’s return. It’d be nice to see Mae Whitman reprise her role as his daughter Patricia Whitmore as well, but there’s been no talk of her involvement at all.

Independence Day 2 is due in theaters on June 24, 2016, so hopefully Emmerich and his team will firm up the cast soon and possibly reveal some story details, too. Back when he planned to shoot ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part 2 back-to-back, Emmerich said the sequel takes place 20 years after the original in a world where humans have harnessed the alien technology, but can’t duplicate it because it’s originally-grown, but there’s been no word on whether or not those details still stand.
