TOP 5: TOTAL RECALL, First Full SKYFALL Trailer, Guillermo del Toro Multi-Part Interview, THE HOBBIT Will Be a Trilogy, Saturn Awards Interviews

by     Posted 2 years, 138 days ago

Last week, I admitted to being among those who become hopelessly caught up in the Olympic Summer Games. One week later and things have taken an unexpected turn for the pathetic as I now find myself legitimately concerned with the “Medal Count”. As if it has any sort of bearing on my own life in any way, shape, and/or form, I’m consistently pulling for the U.S. to overtake China not only in total medals, but also in total Gold medals. In short, whether by virtue of patriotism or just sheer boredom, living vicariously through world-class athletes is what my life has come to.

Sports talk aside, awaiting you on the other end of this week’s Top 5 are brief recaps and links to Steve’s Total Recall video interviews with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and more, the first full trailer for James Bond’s Skyfall, our multi-part interview with the great Guillermo del Toro, the news that The Hobbit will be a trilogy, and all of our Saturn Awards interviews including talks with writer/director Drew Goddard and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.

New images have arrived from the new James Bond film Skyfall and Paul W.S. Anderson‘s Resident Evil: Retribution.  I’m still impressed by the latest Skyfall trailers, and I’m hoping that the face-off between Bond (Daniel Craig) and Javier Bardem‘s villain will be one of the franchise’s best duels.  As for Resident Evil: Retribution, it’s Milla Jovovich wearing skintight leather and wielding two guns, which seems to be more than enough for the franchise’s fans.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Skyfall opens November 9th, and also stars Bérénice Marlohe, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCroy, Albert Finney, and Ralph FiennesResident Evil: Retribution opens September 14th, and also stars Sienna Guillory, Oded Fehr, Boris Kodjoe, Johann Urb, Kevin Durand, Bingbing Li, and Michelle Rodriguez.

First Full Trailer for New James Bond Movie SKYFALL Plus the New International Trailer

by     Posted 2 years, 142 days ago

A full trailer for Skyfall has been released, and it looks like Bond is back in a big way.  Anyone who was disappointed by Quantum of Solace (about 90% of the population, myself included), will likely be back on board with director Sam Mendes‘ take on the franchise.  The upcoming flick looks like it has everything audiences want from a James Bond picture: style, big set pieces, sex, and more style.  Mendes looks like he knows what sets Bond apart from other action stars and taken full advantage of it.  If you’ve been let down by the majority of this summer’s action movies, there may be an excellent one this November.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film stars The film stars Daniel Craig, Bérénice Marlohe, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCroy, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes, and Javier BardemSkyfall opens November 9th. [Update: We have now added the equally bad-ass international trailer, which contains footage that's not in the new domestic trailer; specifically, it has a little bit more of Javier Bardem's terrifying villain]

James Bond’s Aston Martin Returns in New Video Blog for SKYFALL

by     Posted 2 years, 154 days ago

James Bond has gone through plenty of cars throughout the years, but the vehicle most associated with the spy will always be the Aston Martin.  His latest film, Skyfall, will be no exception and a new video blog has been released about Bond’s beloved vehicle.  The model that will be in Skyfall is the Aston Martin DB5, and while we don’t know if it will be outfitted with gadgets (Q is in the movie, played by Ben Whishaw), it will be stylish all the same.  Director Sam Mendes sees the car as a bit of a throwback, going so far as to say, “There’s something about the last part of the movie that could have deliberately, very consciously, could have taken place in 1962.”

Hit the jump to check out the video blog.  The film stars Daniel Craig, Bérénice Marlohe, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Helen McCroy, Albert Finney, and Ralph FiennesSkyfall opens November 9th.

First Image of Ben Whishaw as Q in SKYFALL

by     Posted 2 years, 161 days ago

Director Sam Mendes will make his mark on the Bond franchise later this year with the 23rd film in the series, Skyfall, and we now have our first look at the new Q of the Daniel Craig era.  Ben Whishaw (I’m Not There) takes on the role of 007’s gadget expert in Mendes’ pic, and this image proves that the character does indeed look super smart.  Unless I’m forgetting someone, we’ve yet to see a reinvention of a classic Bond character in the Craig films besides Bond himself, so it’ll be interesting to see how Whishaw’s Q fits into the universe.  The character was memorably played by Desmond Llewelyn from 1963-1999, then John Cleese took over during the Pierce Brosnan era from 1999-2002.

Hit the jump to take a look at the image.  The film also stars Bérénice Marlohe, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Helen McCroy, Albert Finney, and Ralph FiennesSkyfall opens in IMAX and conventional theaters on November 9th.

New SKYFALL Video Blog Looks at the Costumes of James Bond

by     Posted 2 years, 196 days ago

A new video blog for Skyfall has gone online, and this time the focus is on Jany Temime‘s costumes for James Bond (Daniel Craig).  The video does a good job of making you realize there’s much more to outfitting 007 than just making him look stylish and GQ-ready.  James Bond movies are action movies so the costumes have to allow Bond to move quickly, roll around, and still look good.  The suits not only have to fit Craig, but allow him to maneuver, and this video blog shows how they pull that off.

Hit the jump to check out the video blog.  The film also stars Bérénice Marlohe, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCroy, Albert Finney, and Ralph FiennesSkyfall opens in IMAX and conventional theaters on November 9th.

First Teaser Poster for SKYFALL

by     Posted 2 years, 217 days ago

The first teaser poster for the new James Bond film Skyfall has gone online.  It’s not really much, but I guess the word “teaser” should have clued us in on that front.  It plays on the classic Bond imagery while hinting at a bit of a darker tone, and that may or may not be the London Underground.  I’m eager to see what Sam Mendes will do with the Bond universe, and he’s off to a great start as he’s assembled an incredible cast anchored by Javier Bardem as the villain.  This is just a teaser for what’s to come, and we should have a much better idea of what to expect once the teaser trailer debuts on Monday, May 21st at 8:30am BST.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  And if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage, including a video blog recap and interviews with director Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig, producer Barbara Broccoli, Berenice Marlohe, and Naomie Harris and Ola Rapace, be sure to check it out.  Skyfall opens on November 9th.

Ola Rapace Talks SKYFALL, Playing a Villain, Working with Javier Bardem, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 230 days ago

It’s hard to believe just a few days ago I was on the set of the upcoming James Bond film, Skyfall, in Istanbul, Turkey.  As a lifelong Bond fan, getting to see Daniel Craig film part of a huge action scene near the famous Istanbul Spice Market was something I’ll always remember.  For more on the set visit – including a video blog recap – click here.  You can also read or listen to my interviews with director Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig, producer Barbara Broccoli, Berenice Marlohe, and Naomie Harris by clicking the links.

While in Istanbul, I was also able to participate in a roundtable interview with Ola Rapace.  Even though he was very guarded with his answers, we were able to find out that he’s the person that Bond is after at the beginning of the movie, and he may or may not be in business with Javier Bardem.  During the interview, Rapace talked about whether the script changed once he was cast, his training for the role, what it’s like to work with Bardem, filming around the world, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to read or listen to the interview.

New SKYFALL Video Blog Highlights the Sets of the Latest James Bond Film

by     Posted 2 years, 230 days ago

A new video blog for Sam MendesSkyfall has gone online.  Sony is still keeping the plot details of James Bond’s latest adventure under wraps, but Steve was able to tease out a few bits of info when he visited the set earlier this week.  The new video blog doesn’t reveal anything about the story, but it does show off some of the cool sets created by production designer Dennis Gassner (Road to Perdition).  I’m not sure why M (Judi Dench) is working out of what looks like an old train station, but I’m eager to find out.

Hit the jump to check out the video blog, and click the corresponding links for Steve’s interview with Mendes, Daniel Craig, producer Barbara Broccoli, Berenice Marlohe, and Naomie Harris.    The film also stars Javier Bardem, Ben Chaplin, Helen McCroy, Albert Finney, and Ralph FiennesSkyfall opens November 9th.

Daniel Craig and Producer Barbara Broccoli Talk SKYFALL, Going “Classic Bond”, Invoking the Wit of Ian Fleming and More

by     Posted 2 years, 233 days ago

There is something about being in the presence of James Bond.  Maybe it’s because we all grew up watching the character.  Or maybe it’s because we wish we could be him—bedding beautiful women and killing bad guys with ease and style.  And although we all know Daniel Craig is not really James Bond, when he walks into a room filled with reporters from around the world to answer questions about Skyfall, the atmosphere changes.   It’s like everyone just had a few cups of coffee and they’re wide awake and ready to ask a lot of questions.  Trust me: not every actor gets that kind of response from entertainment journalists.

On Sunday afternoon, in Istanbul, Turkey, I got to participate in a roundtable interview with Daniel Craig and producer Barbara Broccoli.  Since Craig had to get back to set to film part of an action sequence on Skyfall, we had limited time.  However, even though Craig and Broccoli were guarded about giving away any of the twists and turns, they still talked about the strength of the script, the humor, how the upcoming teaser trailer only scratches the surface of what Skyfall is about, the stunts, invoking the wit of Ian Fleming, Easter eggs, if Bond 24 is really coming in 2014, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to listen or read the interview.

Director Sam Mendes Talks SKYFALL, How to Craft a Bond Film, the Franchise’s Similarity to DOCTOR WHO, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 233 days ago

While director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Away We Go) has done a lot of press conferences for his upcoming James Bond movie, Skyfall, I’m pretty sure what you’re about to read is the first interview with any substance.  Usually, various press conferences for the film (including the one he did Sunday afternoon in Istanbul, Turkey) are about the city they’re filming in and what is it like to work with Daniel Craig or Naomie Harris.

However, on Sunday afternoon, shortly after the press conference, I participated in a small roundtable interview with Mendes where he actually went into detail about the movie.  He talked about how the script benefited from the production being pushed back, how they landed Javier Bardem and what type of villain he’s going to play, how Skyfall will show more of Bond and M’s relationship/backstory, how he loves what The Dark Knight and Bourne have done in terms of main characters, how audiences have embraced movies that go darker and more personal, the challenge of filming action scenes, and finding new ways to tell a Bond story.  Hit the jump to listen or read the interview.

Berenice Marlohe Talks SKYFALL, Playing a Femme Fatale/Bond Girl, How She Was Cast, and More

by     Posted 2 years, 233 days ago

In every James Bond movie, there is always an insanely attractive woman cast to play the so called “Bond Girl.”  In director Sam Mendes, Skyfall, the 23rd Bond movie currently filming in Istanbul, Turkey, she’s being played by French actress Berenice Marlohe.  And after speaking with her on Sunday afternoon with a small group of reporters, I can say that the role has been perfectly cast.

During the interview, Marlohe revealed what she could about her character, how the script changed since being cast, her thoughts on being a “Bond girl,” what kind of training she went through before filming began, if she plays a lethal femme fatale, her costumes, how she got cast, and more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

Naomie Harris Talks SKYFALL, Her Favorite Bond and Bond Girl, the Moneypenny Rumors and More

by     Posted 2 years, 233 days ago

In the upcoming James Bond movie, Skyfall, Naomie Harris plays Eve (not Moneypenny), and she’s out in the field fighting alongside Bond (Daniel Craig) against villains played by Javier Bardem and Ola Rapace.  On Sunday afternoon, during a roundtable interview in Istanbul, Turkey (where they’re currently filming), Harris talked about how she got involved in Skyfall, her character, preparing to do the action, what makes Craig special as Bond, her favorite Bond girl, what it’s like to work for director Sam Mendes, her reaction to reading the script for the first time, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to listen or read the interview.

Sony Eyeing Late 2014 Release Date for JAMES BOND 24; SKYFALL Trailer to Debut with MEN IN BLACK 3

by     Posted 2 years, 238 days ago

James Bond had to stay off-duty for four years due to the financial meltdown of MGM, but the franchise found at home at Sony, and then kicked into production on the spy’s next adventure, Skyfall.  The studio has no intention of giving 007 another extended vacation, and at CinemaCon yesterday, Rory Bruer, the company’s President of Worldwide Distribution, said the studio is aiming to have Bond 24 hit theaters in late 2014.  I would be willing to go a step further and assume the studio would like the film in November 2014 since November has been home to all of the Daniel Craig Bond movies.

Speaking of Craig, his contract will allow him to refuse returning for the next movie.  He’s given no indication that he has any plans to leave the franchise, but we’ll have to wait for confirmation, which probably won’t come until after Skyfall is released.  Skyfall is due out on November 9th, and the first trailer will be attached to Men in Black 3, which opens on May 25th.  Hit the jump for a description of the trailer.

8 New Images from SKYFALL, Plus Javier Bardem Talks About His Villain Character

by     Posted 2 years, 253 days ago

Calling all James Bond fans: some great Skyfall content has hit the web.  Not only do we now have eight new images from the latest entry in the James Bond franchise, but a featurette has been posted that features Javier Bardem talking about his villain character.  The images have your typical “Daniel Craig looking like a bad ass” feel, but we also get a look at new Bond girl Naomie Harris and half of Ralph Fiennes.  The nature of the Harry Potter actor’s role is being tightly kept under wraps, but this is the first time we’ve seen what his character looks like.  Half his face is hidden behind a door to prevent being shot to bits, but I think we can safely assume he’s also self-conscious of his badly burned and disfigured left side (we can’t).

Hit the jump to check out the images and the video of Bardem and Craig talking about the film.  Rumor has it (via The Daily Mail) that we’ll see the first trailer for Skyfall in front of Men in Black 3Skyfall opens on November 9th.
