Open Road Films has released a new trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller Side Effects.  The film stars Rooney Mara as a troubled young woman who develops a dangerous love triangle between her doctor (Jude Law) and her newly paroled husband (Channing Tatum).  The engaging thriller aspect of the film is still very effective in this trailer, but we also get a better look at some of Soderbergh’s gorgeous camerawork as well.  Can we all mount a last-ditch effort to stop him from retiring?

As we move closer towards the release of Side Effects, which could very well be the final theatrically released film from director Steven Soderbergh, many are looking back at the multitude of great features that the filmmaker has made over the past two decades.  One of the more fascinating projects that Soderbergh was attached that didn’t come to fruition was a feature film adaptation of the 1960s spy TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E..  The filmmaker was developing the project only just a couple of years ago, before ultimately bowing out in late 2011 over creative differences with Warner Bros.

Steve recently sat down with screenwriter Scott Z. Burns in anticipation of Soderbergh’s upcoming thriller Side Effects, and during the course of their conversation Burns talked about working with Soderbergh on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. In addition to talking about possible casting for the film, Burns went into quite a bit of detail with regards to the proposed plot of their take.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

We are always interested in the latest Steven Soderbergh offering, no matter how opaque.  I think Side Effects is about pharmacology and sexiness, but I know I want to see it.  It seems as if the story centers on the too-perfect couple from the unnerving pharmaceutical ad (played by Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum) whose life falls into shambles if you explore any deeper than their 30-second bliss.

We are proud to premiere a new TV spot for Side Effects, which doesn’t shed much more light on the plot specifics, but continues to highlight the appeal.  Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones also star in Side Effects, set for release on February 8.  Watch the spot after the jump.

A new U.K. trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming psychopharmacology thriller Side Effects has been released online.  The film stars Rooney Mara as a troubled young woman who develops a dangerous love triangle between her doctor (Jude Law) and her newly paroled husband (Channing Tatum).  This new trailer sets up the pharamacology portion fairly quickly, but then we get some promising looks at just how dark, sexual, and crazy Soderbergh looks to be going.  There’s quite a bit of new footage to thumb through, and I’m hoping that this trailer doesn’t show too much.

We’ve got a first look at perennial badass Liam Neeson in the new Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) film, Non-Stop.  While it looks like Neeson has an entire plane held hostage at gunpoint, methinks maybe there’s someone nefarious just off screen.  Non-Stop also stars Michelle Dockery, Julianne Moore and Scoot McNairy.

We’ve also got some lovely shots of stars Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara in Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects.  While the couple looks happy in these images, the pharmaceutical-slanted plot suggests that feeling may not last.  Also starring Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Side Effects opens February 8th.  Hit the jump to check out all the images.

A new trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s possibly final theatrically released film Side Effects has been released.  Rooney Mara stars as a troubled young woman who develops a dangerous love triangle between her doctor (Jude Law) and her newly paroled husband (Channing Tatum).  I love the fact that Soderbergh is tackling a psychological thriller for one of his last features, and the director’s use of close-ups and handheld definitely gives this trailer a feeling of clausterphobia and unease.  It should be mentioned, though, that the filmmaker has been a fan of pulling a bit of a bait-and-switch with his recent trailers, marketing Haywire and Magic Mike as a straightforward action film and flashy stripper movie, respectively, when both films actually turned out to have much more going on.  I look forward to seeing what kind of twist Soderbergh has in store for Side Effects.

Channing Tatum came close to being an also-ran, but this year turned him into a star. Between The Vow, 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike, he went from being a lunkhead into a likeable lunkhead. He got the joke. Magic Mike was directed by Steven Soderbergh, and the story was that Soderbergh was so intrigued by Tatum’s life as a male stripper, he saw potential for a movie there. He was right, there is a good movie in his story, and Magic Mike was one of the best mainstream films of the summer. Our review of the Blu-ray follows after the jump.

The first trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller Side Effects has been released.  Rooney Mara stars as a troubled young woman who develops a dangerous love triangle between her doctor (Jude Law) and her newly paroled husband (Channing Tatum).  It’s tough to get a grasp on exactly what the film’s about from this trailer, but I was sold the minute I heard “Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller.”  The film also reunites the filmmaker with his Contagion screenwriter Scott Z. Burns.  Mara’s proven herself to be an incredibly strong actress, and it appears we may get some intense performances from her, Tatum, and Law.  Moreover, Side Effects may or may not be Soderbergh’s second-to-last film ever, as the Liberace biopic Behind the Candleabra is the only other film the director is set to release for the foreseeable future.

We previously reported that a sequel to Magic Mike was in the works after the success of the original film, but now it looks like star and producer Channing Tatum may find himself in the director’s chair for Magic Mike 2.  Since director Steven Soderbergh is planning on retiring from filmmaking and headed towards TV land, he presumably wouldn’t be returning for the sequel which leaves the spot open.  Tatum recently spoke about the possibility of him assuming the director’s role alongside screenwriting partner and producer Reid Carolin.  Carolin, meanwhile, leaked a few details about the plotline the sequel would follow.  Hit the jump to see what he said and to find out who else is in the running to direct Magic Mike 2.

We’ve got an odd assortment of images for you to check out today, starting with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas in costume for Behind the Candelabra, the Liberace biopic from director Steven Soderbergh.  Douglas stars as the late pianist and vocalist while Damon plays his lover, Scott Thorson.  The picture, produced by Jerry Weintraub, will debut on HBO before moving to a theatrical release.  The picture also stars Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Debbie Reynolds, and Scott Bakula.

One of the most heated debates raging on in the filmmaking world is that of film vs. digital, or more specifically the threat of film becoming history in the shadow of an increasingly digital world.  Keanu Reeves took it upon himself to explore this issue in a documentary called Side by Side, and he rounded up some of the most influential filmmakers working today like James Cameron, David Fincher, George Lucas, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Steven Soderbergh, and many more to discuss the topic at length.

The first image from the set of what may or may not be Steven Soderbergh’s last film has a director has landed online.  His pre-sabbatical pic is a biopic of famed artist Liberace that he’s been developing for quite some time, and we now get our first look at Michael Douglas as the flamboyant pianist and Matt Damon as his lover Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra.  The scene in question seems to be from Liberace’s earlier years given Douglas’ hair color, but the two actors definitely have the 70s look down.

Produced by Jerry Weintraub, Behind the Candelabra is skipping the theatrical route and will make its debut on HBO.  The impressive ensemble cast includes Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd, Debbie Reynolds, and Scott Bakula.  I’m eager to see what kind of tone Soderbergh has settled on and whether we’re in for a straightforward biopic or something a bit different.  Knowing Soderbergh it’s most likely the latter, which is a very good thing.  Hit the jump to check out the image.

One of the best films of 2012 so far is a movie about male strippers.  I’m dead serious.  With Magic Mike, director Steven Soderbergh crafted a movie that works wonderfully both as an entertaining ensemble and as an introspective, sad portrait of the reality of the American Dream.  Matthew McConaughey gives one of the best performances of his career, and Channing Tatum continues his 2012 streak of proving that he’s a genuinely talented guy.  Though we already know that Tatum and Jonah Hill are developing a sequel to 21 Jump Street, and Tatum recently revealed that he’s working on a stage musical adaptation of Magic Mike with Soderbergh, the actor now says that he’s also developing a feature film sequel to Magic Mike.  Hit the jump for more.

The theory that audiences would wait for the tentpole movies of July before opening their wallets went down in flames this weekend as two all-original movies (R-rated ones at that) delivered stellar openings. Ted and Magic Mike bested Brave by taking first and second place: nearly doubling their pre-weekend projections and giving box office watchers a lot more to consider than the imminent arrival of The Amazing Spider-Man.

This weekend I find myself deep in the heart of Louisville, KY for Fandomfest Louisville 2012. Part Comic-Con, part pop culture celebration, and part horror film festival, a few guests of note include Bruce Campbell, Sean Astin, Tyler Mane, and slasher icon Kane Hodder. While each of these attendees has a special place in my pop culture heart in one way or another, my mission today is to track down former WCW star Diamond Dallas Page. 10 year-old me loved nothing more than watching DDP and co. weekly on WCW Monday Nitro, and today may be the only opportunity I get to share that joy with someone who was an integral part of it.
