The first Infinitely Polar Bear trailer has been released. Marking the feature debut for writer-director Maya Forbes, the film stars Mark Ruffalo as a manic depressive father struggling to raise his daughters and win back his wife (Zoe Saldana). It looks like Ruffalo delivers a fantastic performance, as always, and he seems to have a lovely chemistry with Saldana.

It’s always great when a film gives voice to the subject of mental illness, and hopefully this is one of the good ones that can tackle the subject head on without sugarcoating the issue, turning the main character into a cartoon, or offering a false “suddenly everything is A-okay” catharsis. Forbes wrote the movie based on a difficult chapter in her own childhood, so I’m hoping the film has its heart in the right place.

Ruffalo is on a roll right now, gathering awards recognition for his work in Foxcatcher and The Normal Heart, and returning to screens as Bruce Banner and The Hulk with Avengers: Age of Ultron finally hitting theaters May 1st. Infinitely Polar Bear has no set release date at this point, but in the mean time you can check out Steve’s TIFF interviews with Ruffalo and Forbes.
