After the Coen Brothers fired off four excellent films in the span of four years, it feels like an eternity until we’ll see their next one, Inside Llewyn Davis.  The movie stars Oscar Isaac as the eponymous young musician (loosely based on real-life folk singer Dave Van Ronk) trying to make it in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene.  The film shot in Manhattan earlier this year, and I harbored a brief hope that the flick would appear at the Toronto International Film Festival, but no dice.  It looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer, but at least today we know a little bit more about the film.

Hit the jump for what Isaac had to say about the upcoming movie, which also stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, Stark Sands, and John Goodman.

According to THR, the movie tracks a week in Davis’ life in 1960 (or 1961).  Isaac also says that his twenty years of playing guitar came in handy since they did the music live on set:

“We did all the music live, no playback; it’s like a concert movie. There’s like six or seven songs in it.”

I saw Isaac do some guitar playing and singing in Ten Year, and he did a good job with it.  I’m curious how the Coens will use the music in the movie.  Will it be a kind of musical, will the songs be used for montages, clips used over particular scenes, as background music, or will it be a mixture of all of the above?  I’m also curious if they wrote original songs or if they used the music of Van Ronk and other 1960s Greenwich Village folk musicians.

I’d be shocked if we didn’t see Inside Llweyn Davis in 2013, and hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

I think the date might be February 8. I saw it on IMDb but I have no idea if that date will stick.
