Summit Entertainment has released the first image from the studio’s upcoming Divergent sequel Insurgent, and it appears as though our lead characters have gotten themselves into a bit of trouble. The Divergent Series: Insurgent is the second in what will be a four-film adaptation of author Veronica Roth’s dystopian sci-fi series, and it finds the principal characters on the run in the fringes of society after breaking open the world as they knew it. Robert Schwentke (Red) takes over directing duties from Neil Burger this time around, and I can’t say I was encouraged by the CG-laden first teaser trailer for this sequel. Luckily a new trailer is set to debut next Friday, December 12th, where we’ll hopefully be given a proper introduction to how the studio is handling the follow-up. It has a solid cast and a cinematic premise, so the pieces are there.
For now, check out the first official Insurgent movie image after the jump, featuring stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort. The film also stars Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, and Zoe Kravitz. The Divergent Series: Insurgent opens on March 20, 2015.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Divergent Series: Insurgent:
The Divergent Series: Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.
The image and new trailer release date were both revealed on the official Insurgent Twitter account.
