It’s no secret that Christopher Nolan is a very big proponent of film as opposed to digital. His preference goes beyond the shooting of the movie to the actual projection, and not unlike Quentin Tarantino, Nolan very much prefers that you see his movies projected on film. Today, Paramount released the final trailer for Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar and also confirmed what we heard last night, which is that the film will be opening two days early on 75mm IMAX and 35mm screens. That means if your local theater has converted to digital projectors both in their regular theaters and IMAX, you’ll have to wait two more days to see the film. It’s kind of a shame since most theaters across the country have converted to digital—especially in the middle of the country, where digital projection is cheaper to maintain—but it’s nice to see that Nolan is doing everything he can to advocate for film projection.
If you’d like to find out where your nearest 70mm or 35mm projection theater is, Paramount has put together a handy list that reveals all of the locations for every format available. Check it out after the jump. Interstellar will be released on film on November 5th and everywhere else on November 7th.
The official Interstellar site has a full listing of all of the theaters that are projecting the film in 70mm IMAX, 70mm, 35mm, digital IMAX, 4K digital, and digital. Sadly, there aren’t many 70mm IMAX theaters left in the country, as most have converted to the inferior digital projectors.
For those wondering what the big hubbub is about 70mm, here’s how the site explains the projection as it relates to Interstellar:
Select IMAX theaters will be offering the IMAX Experience featuring 15 perf/70mm film projection which combines the brightest, clearest images at almost 10 times the resolution of standard projection formats, with powerful, laser-aligned digital sound and customized theater geometry to create the world’s most immersive movie experience.
C’mon, theater chains. At least leave the IMAX screens in the film format!
