First Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for director Christopher Nolan’s new film Interstellar.  The sci-fi pic stars Matthew McConaughey and revolves around a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole “to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”  Though this teaser trailer features very, very little footage from the still in-production film, it’s a surprisingly moving piece that draws on the human spirit’s drive to keep moving forward.  I’ll say no more and let you experience the teaser for yourself, but the prospect of seeing Nolan further explore these themes in the full film is definitely exciting.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser Interstellar trailer.  The film also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine, David Oyelowo, Wes Bentley, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, David Gyasi, Mackenzie Foy, Bill Irwin, Timothée Chalamet, and Matt DamonInterstellar opens November 7, 2014.

    So it is about corn
Nolan could do whatever he wants and his groupies will eat it up

    • axalon

Don’t you get tired of being negative all the time? It must be exhausting.

      • ThisGuy01

I’d prefer a movie about corn than some rich pansy in a Bat suit. At least corn is fucking real.

      • Murdoch

Pansy? Are you confusing Batman with Iron Man? One’s a ninja & the other is an alcoholic.

      • watever

There is even a genre called “fantasy”, because in art, not everything is real you know.

      • lordjim

you are absolutely right.somebody should have told that nolan before he had the idea to exchange gotham city for a real city and the batmobil for a tank, while keeping the costume so that the billionaire turned private detective would look even more ludicrous and out of place.anyway, nolan´s idea of dreams in inception proved this guy is a machine, not an artist, and the technological hoax he produces is usually an interesting mindgame, but for fantasy i would look elsewhere.

      • watever

So Nolan himself told you, that his purpose with the Dark Knight movies was to make a superhero real? Wow, interesting. So in your logic, sci-fi is bullshit too, because they want not existing technology to be logical, and scientifically right.

      • lordjim

nolan told me something?in my logic sci-fi is bullshit??maybe, you should sit down and read my comment again, but this time try to use your brain.

      • HeSaidSheSaidReviewSite

Real = better. Gotcha. You must be a real fun guy to hang out with.

    • jack

you were one of those kids that could never see the deeper themes in the books you read right? Always needed to be hit over the head with what it was actually about?

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

        Lol
U the kind of person who thinks that Nolan and PTA are great directors
        Lol
If you only knew the book I read and movies I see
The kind of arts that would go right over your head
I’m the kind of guy who would watch andrei rublev twice than watch inception again.
I’d rather watch the Turin horse six time straight than watch the dark knight rises.
I’d rather read Anna Karenina again than watch the prestige .

      • lordjim

finally someone who appreciates a masterpiece, you absolutely need to watch “woman in the dunes”!

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

        Already did
        Got the criterion DVD
        Great fucking movie

And with all of the fruitful reading, the English language still seems to be lost on you. Isn’t that curious?

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

        I didn’t know I was writting a thesis
        Fuck that
        It’s the Internet
Are you trying to tell me this is your best writting ???
        Lol

      • Nick

There’s a middle ground between writing a thesis and being stupid.

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

Then you’re well over that line bruh

      • axalon

Nothing says “I know what I’m talking about” like Lols and multiple question marks.

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

        ?
        Lol

      • Reality Check

Geez. You’re that much into “important” literature and movies, and yet you spend this much time attacking Nolan’s movies?

You do realize Nolan isn’t trying to make small art movies that appeal to a very niche audience, right? He’s making mainstream movies that nevertheless have some thought put into them.

Any attempt to compare apples and oranges just shows…you still don’t get it. And you probably never will.

Hipster phonies fade away fast, but Nolan’s work will endure.

Next generation will scratch their head when they see inception, dark knight rises and the prestige and wonder what was the big deal about this guy…
Memento, maybe, will survive the test of time

      • lordjim

you are right that one cannot compare apples and oranges, but:ha, i´m gonna earn a lot of hate for this comment (and i don´t even hate nolan, i just find his fanboys annoying that compare him to the second coming of kubrick, because he puts some thought into mainstream movies – i mean david fincher does that too, maybe it´s because fincher doesn´t do comic book movies)
but “batman returns” IS an art movie, every frame is a painting, like in an expressionistic silent movie from the twenties, every shadow is thought out.burton really had balls back then.compared to that nolan has a very anonymous style, and he started so great with memento and the insomnia remake (at least until the hollywood cop out ending, but that might have been forced upon him by the studio, don´t know).so i was really looking forward to him directing batman movies, and it felt like the studio cut of his balls.and yes his movies have more intelligence than the marvel movies, but at least with the avengers my inner child was happy, with nolan not so.when i want to watch something like “the dark knight”, i rather watch “heat” – it´s just as well constructed , and has a lot more style, and better action too.not that nolan´s movies are bad, they aren´t masterpieces though.anyway, let´s see where he goes with “interstellar”.

      • Mixed Race rich kid NYC

I liked the way Gotham was portrayed in batman begins but in the sequels for some reason Gotham became a generic American city with no personality

      • Mike

With all those high art books that would go over our heads, it’s surprising you didn’t learn to write better. Your writing level is quite indicative of the sort of material you take in. You write like you read Empire magazine.

      • Osiris

        so brave

      • James

It appears as though you aren’t of the intellect to read, much less critique anything, at all.

P.S. I have no opinions on Nolan, I could care less. However, I will say making Batman and the entire universe more real made them about a billion times better than any other Batman movies. Remembering the older movies makes me want to vomit profusely, and I was a child when I watched them, so I can only imagine how bad they seemed to an intelligent adult at the time of their release.

    • Worst Trailer in a Long While

      HAHAHAHAHHA LOLOLOLOLOLO!
Holy Shite this looks f–king terrible! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!
Shit, the haters are going to have so much ammo so. Opening shot of a corn field? Do the Nolan’s do any research before they start making a movie? They do know that us being depend on corn isn’t a good thing right? God they’re stupid.

  • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

It’s a pretty cool trailer which tells us almost nothing about the movie.

    • Jack le Critic

It’s a pretty poor trailer which tells us almost nothing about the movie.

    • Mattie Dubbs

thats why its called a teaser and not a trailer…

      • Nick

People here are so eager to hate or defend Nolan that they don’t even know what is what anymore. Vicious, this guy was complimenting the trailer you moron.

      • Doctor Reality

Actually, you’re being vicious. He wasn’t attacking the OP. Just re-iterating the fact that it’s a (mysterious) teaser.

      • Nick

Lol…no one is calling anyone vicous,, referring to his name ya goof

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

I liked it. I just would have preferred finding a bit more about what to except from the movie. It’s ok to tease the actual plot.

  • Angel of Death

I know it’s just a teaser, but why bother putting a teaser together if a) you have no real footage, and b) you insert nothing interesting about the movie to tease other than the fact that it’s from Nolan? This could have been a bloody Super Bowl Nike commercial for all we knew.

    • Adam Chitwood

It teases the central themes of the film in a unique way which, arguably, is more interesting than a supercut of people’s faces.

      • Angel of Death

Debatable. I’m up for emphasizing the central themes of a movie in the marketing campaign. But you’re not really giving audiences anything to really excite them, apart from Nolan’s name alone. If you and a lot of other folks are excited by this, I’ll respect that. But to me, it was pretty lazy. This is literally just a cut of historical footage, spliced together by inspiring voice-over. This essentially could have been an ad for anything by anyone. There’s nothing special at all about it. If you’re selling a movie, SELL THE MOVIE, not just its themes. Don’t sell me something so vague and general that I’d have no real idea what it’s for.

      • Angel of Death

And you know, maybe in Nolan and the studio’s defense, it’s not their fault, but the fault of every manipulative corporate ad that’s ever been created about reaching for innovation, with historical footage cut to inspirational music and voice over. And maybe it’s such an over-done cliche at this point, that it loses any effect when a new ad comes out that’s exactly like every other ad out there. Who knows. Perhaps I’m just desensitized to any and all sorts of advertising nowadays.

      • Adam Chitwood

Nolan’s name alone sells the movie, so I personally like that they tried to sell the emotion rather than the action/intensity, which will surely come out in further trailers. But I get what you’re saying. To me, though, it felt earnest rather than cliched.

From a practical standpoint, they’re still in the middle of production and I doubt they have any VFX shots from the space-portions of the film that would be ready for public consumption.

And now I’ve given way too much thought to a 1:53 piece of marketing for a movie that doesn’t come out for an entire year.

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

Is Collider encouraging their writers to join the discussion boards? This is 2nd writer to comment in the last 24 hours.

        I’m all for it.

      • gwiz30

Why not stop wasting time and not show any footage at all and just have the trailer say coming soon from Christopher Nolan “Interstellar”.

      • Farrell

        Excellent points.

      • Frank Derbert

Now that the Dark Knight Rises has gone on to be one of the most reviled movies of recent times, I think it behooves the studio to remove Nolan’s name from the trailer altogether, much like how M. Night’s name was not part of the marketing campaign for After Earth.

      • demonicstrawberry

One of the most reviled movies of recent times? Utter BS. 88% Fresh rating. 90% of the audience liked it, with an average 4.3 out of 5 rating. That’s pretty far from “reviled.”

And this teaser? Excellent. Can’t wait to see the movie.

      • Frank Derbert

People fucking hate it bro. The hype on it’s initial release won over sheep and simpletons but now that time has passed people are going to town on how shitty it is. It’s called the test of time idiot.

      • http://thenonessentials.blogspot.com/ Sean Chandler

Frank Derbert, SOME people did hate TDKR, and others loved it. It isn’t a universally criticized film by any means. It’s in no way has a the universal disdain that a movie like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls took as time passed. To claim otherwise is to choose to be willfully ignorant.

More importantly, even if it was universally hated, M. Night released 3 or 4 artistic bombs before they started to removed his name. And his bombs were both critical and fan bombs. As of right now, Nolan’s lowest rated film Rotten Tomatoes, The Prestige, has a 75%. 2nd lowest is his indie film Following. Next lowest is Batman Begins at 85%. In other words, he’s a critical darling who makes hit films.

Suggesting they should remove Nolan’s name is naive at best.

      • Frank Derbert

Also, do you by any chance know if there is a Trayvon Martin impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like CORN. ;-) Lulz!

      • Ched Groundheggin

sorry TDKR isn’t really good, its not terrible but as a conclusion to the nolan trilogy is can be viewed as terrible because it is such a let down-

      • Jack le Critic

“If you’re selling a movie, SELL THE MOVIE, not just its themes.” – spot on.

      • Joseph M

It works as a teaser. We now know (officially) that it’s about humankind hitting the stars and exploring space deeper than ever before.
The corn? I have no idea.

      • Francis Corn Corn

Simple: Nolan likes cornholes and he likes the sent of his own corn hole so the movie will primarily focus on Nolan’s anus. He’s already created a new form of filmmaking that will place an I-MAX camera on a jet that will fly into his ass to give his fans a bird’s eye view of the thing they love to spend the majority of their time in.

      • bombinUSA on his 2nd beer

. . . and speaking of Corn, does anybody know if there is a Trayvon Martin impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like CORN. ;-) Lulz!

Again, your anger issues stem from the fact that your angry at your father. It comes out in these fits of rage where you make incoherent rants about piss and corn. I want you today, while you are working at the Oliver Garden, try these exercises: smile at others as you serve them their bread, repeat to yourself that even though you have no friends that Jesus still loves you and finally not asking random customers to “urinate” in your mouth. Practice this during the week and we will get back together to see how your progressive is going.

    • Tyler

It keeps us guessing. Nolan is one of those filmmakers who doesn’t like to spoil every minute of the film in the first two trailers. He wants people to be surprised when the enter the theatre, but also be intrigued enough to go see it in the first place. A smart move that paid off handsomely with Inception.

      • Angel of Death

Yes, but with Inception, he showed us intriguing footage FROM THE MOVIE. We didn’t know, what the footage was about, but it was footage that could ONLY be seen in THAT movie. It was unique. It was thrilling. It kept us intrigued into the mystery of what this movie would be about while giving us a glimpse of what to expect in the movie. This, on the other hand, shows us Matthew McConaghey crying. This could easily be for Dallas Buyers Club, or a commercial for IBM. Without the studio logos, without Nolan’s name, and without the title, anyone could think this was a commercial for NASA or Budweiser.

  • Blitz

This is clearly to just let the general audience know that the guy who made the TDK trilogy is putting out a new movie next year , which is the point of a teaser.

    • This will bomb

“From the guy that destroyed the Dark Knight trilogy by being lazy as shit comes another half-assed, tossed off money grab.”
[Shot of Corn field, audience : “oooh, ahhh”

HA HA HA HA HA HA! OMG, Piss drinking troll, you’re so funny! Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re not the best! I wish i could be as cool as you! LULZ!

      • God of Collider

Thanks bro! It makes it all worth it to know the fans still appreciate what I do. Get ready for a huge beatdown once Interstellar comes out to poor reviews and middling box office returns. I back. Trust me. I back.

      • junierizzle

How about hoping this is a good movie? But I guess it doesn’t matter. If the flick turns out great and critics love it and it’s a hit, you’ll find something to troll about. Hey, someone has to be a troll, right? Have at it, my man.

      • God of Collider

        Lulz ;)

      • Chris Nolan Super Fraud

Sorry guys. Apologies. I was typing this in my online diary that I keep but was rerouted back here. My therapist said it would be good for me to let the anger out as I deal w mutiple personalities and have little self confidence. But honestly after spending the day painting my nails black and screaming that I hate my father I realized that I should be happy with my life. I recently recieved a 12″ black dildo sent by Amazon that actually had one of their Cyberdine-like flying robots drop it directly into my ass. So I wanted to tell everyone thank you for pitching in and buying this for me. My heart and my ass are both now raging w anticpation for the new years as I will get to see another Nolan masterpiece as I sit on my new present. Cheers and god bless Collider.

Photography looks beautiful, was really hoping we’d get to see a glimpse of the wormhole.

    • Dirk McGirk

What about a glimpse of the cornhole?

Bringing back the “..NOT” jokes? How classic ….NOT ;)

    • God of Collider

      Lol. Soooo deep brah.

      • Frank Derbert

Not as deep as the thought of the most overrated directors of all time pissing in my mouth, but pretty close. Speaking of which, does anybody know if there is a Trayvon Martin impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? • Julio Navas

Fantastic teaser. This is supossed to show human´s ambition to reach the unreachable, which is the main theme of Interstellar.

  • AlexTheKaiser

Well…that felt pretentious. I love Christopher Nolan but I have to admit, all of his teaser trailers are terrible! They’re filled with stock footage and show absolutely nothing about the plot that might be interesting to the viewer.

    • Mattie Dubbs

teaser teaser teaser…do you not get the purpose of a teaser vs a trailer?

      • God of Collider

The purpose of the teaser is to show a shot of corn and the name of an asshole who’s lost his touch? Nobody going to go see this.

    [insert generic inspirational monologue here]
I’m still looking forward to the film but the trailer does nothing for me, at all, lol.

  • The Destroyer

I’m intrigued. I loved the shots of early space travel with the monologue that we are still pioneers. It invites a wonder that we have lost.
For those who don’t understand the corn, I haven’t read the script, but corn is a cheap crop with low nutritional value. So it would make since for in a future world that is low on food, to have lots of corn because it is easy and cheep to grow.

  • mike

Interesting choice of books featured at 1:17, especially Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s ‘One hundred years of solitude’, I haven’t read it but the plot seems to be about a family’s emigration from a Colombian town in search of “a better life and a new home” and the subsequent founding of Macondo, a utopian city in a new land…

    Great Teaser :)

  • Anthony Michael

The movie could be great, but this teaser indicated nothing. No excitement, no disappointment… just… nothing.

    • Mattie Dubbs

cause its called a TEASER not a trailer dumby…

      • Anthony Michael

I hate when people act like the spelling police on these discussions, but if you’re going to insult my intelligence, maybe you should try to spell the insult correctly?
Also, I’m well aware of what a teaser is. I didn’t complain that the video showed little footage. Most teasers are like that. But a teaser *that works* is one that indicates that it is something I should be excited for. This teaser made me feel nothing.
A teaser should build anticipation. For me, this one was unsuccessful. If it worked for you, great. I’m glad it did.

  • Jacquie Sanchez Galla

Nolan makes the perfect trailers. No spoilers what so ever unlike every other trailer in the world that flashes the most important and funny or sad scenes in the movie, giving everything away.
You can’t be amazing at what you do without making a couple jealous enemies along the way. Nolan keep it up!

  • thinker365

Man, I wish a really influential and cool director like Nolan would make a really engaging and eye-opening movie about climate change and the urgency to do something about it. Not preachy or anything, but thought-provoking and cool to watch. Space travel is important too, but I dunno, what about THIS planet.

    • Redjester

Considering this planet has a population threshold, we are going to have to move on “to the stars”eventually. Why can’t we promote fighting global climate change and advancing space travel/colonization simultaneously?

      • thinker365

Sure, we SHOULD do both, but I think if we don’t learn to make the best out of THIS planet, we’ll just keep making the same mistake over and over again on every other planet we potentially colonize and inhabit. Ironically enough, Man of Steel kinda covered that…

I’ll admit, I chuckled when I saw the corn.

The vibe here is great and the picture looks like it could be really decent. There was some actual feeling in that monologue. Nolan’s work is so much better when the dialogue is at least halfway decent. Despite the obviously space-based themes, perhaps Nolan will deliver a film that is down-to-earth and human in its tone. I thought TDKR was absolute garbage, and Inception was sterile beyond belief, but I like parts of everything else he’s done and Memento is a masterpiece… hopefully he will top himself with Interstellar. I’ll go in with an open mind for sure, and cross my fingers that it’s not the arrow-tip of the new charm offensive that Monsanto is orchestrating =P

Saw this trailer when I saw Hobbit 2. It’s better than Hobbit 2.

  • danny

CORN Dammit you fucking bastards there trying to save delicious Bud Light

  • danny

I will only see the movie if Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway go totally hard on each other in space IMAX

My criteria for a good teaser-trailer:
    1. Does it not give anything away/show too much.
    2. Is it cinematically gorgeous/show the potential for stunning performances.
    3. Does it fill you with intrigue/leave you wanting more.

This trailer fulfilled that and then some.

What kind of trailer is this?

    • mattinacan

      it’s not a trailer

      • Daniel Mitchell

The title of this article by Collider disagrees.

First Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR

      • mattinacan

the title is as incorrect as you are

I just love the shot of corn at the beginning of trailer. It’s just like Nolan says to all his haters – “Hey you. That’s corn and it will be a kick-ass movie”.

  • stylus59

very anticlimactic. the vertical logo and the “One Year From Now” is quite cheesy

  • eternalozzie

Even though I am not a Nolan fan (he crapped all over the Batman universe in the 3rd and bad film) this movie sounds very interesting and has a great cast.

What’s the problem with the corn guys ?
Sir Ridley started his movie Gladiator with a wheat field. And it was a masterpiece.

  • Colin Christian

I think the trailer did a great job outlining the theme of the movie,I honestly don’t know why some have a problem with it,I found it pretty inspiring,I don’t need everything handed to me on a plate,I have imagination enough to find it interesting.

  • thinker365

It works as a teaser in that I really want to see more. It’s definitely a tease…

lol the comments on this are HILARIOUS

  • ʝoe ßloggs

Very very nice. Matt’s narration is very compelling.
That end title: One Year From Now…sets a simple goal for expectancy.
The teaser did exactly what it set out to do. Tease.

  • MITIOR

love it or hate it, this trailer has all of you talking about it.

On the one hand I agree that too many trailers give away too much. But there’s a good way to do a teaser that actually teases the movie and gives a little bit about what it’s about. Heck, the jurassic park teaser was awesome and it showed zero footage from the movie.

Sorry, I just don’t buy that “it’s a teaser” is an excuse to release something that’s so generic that it has practically nothing to do with the movie. Sure it’s a year away. But if they don’t want to show anything this early then they might as well wait and release the first teaser or trailer six months from now.

And for the record, I’m not hating on the movie or on Nolan. And the teaser is even well done for what it is, it just doesn’t make me want to see the movie.

  • I hate teasers

    Such a tease

I find it hard to believe that an NYU film student would openly avail themselves to such criticism by being openly pretentious and bragging out their allegedly superior intellect. I know because I am an NYU graduate. While we do have a significant amount of pretentious and unbearable snobs, I do not know of a one that would comment on collider.com to brag about their supposed knowledge and experience. If you get your thrills from a film website, you need to evaluate your daily activities and general life plan.

Just playin’ with you, brah! Also, does anybody know if there is a Trayvon Martin impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d really like that, in fact, i’m pretty sure that it’ll be the best birthday ever! I’m willing to pay $300 cash. $350 if he can make it taste like CORN. ;-) Lulz!
