A batch of new Into the Woods images from director Rob Marshall’s (Chicago) feature film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical has landed online.  The Disney production stars James Corden (Begin Again) and Emily Blunt as a Baker and his wife who venture into the woods to confront the witch responsible for putting a curse on the childless couple.  Along the way, they run into a number of familiar fairy tale characters.  Today’s new images reveal quite a few of these, including Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf, and Chris Pine as Prince Charming.  It’s an absolutely stacked cast, and Marshall had everyone sing live on set, so it should be interesting to see the final result come together this Christmas.  With these images debuting today, I imagine a first trailer is right around the corner.

Here’s the official synopsis for Into the Woods:

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Really only interested in this because of Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep. Johny Depp is just going to do his normal polarizing, weird, over the top performance that half the people will love, and the other half hate.

Honestly the main reason for anyone to see this is probably the original show and songs. Not too excited for Depp just because he’s not much of a singer.

      • Duuuuuuude

Yeah you’re right, Johnny Depp has no experience playing malevolent characters in a musical.
        Oh wait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5O9yLhEuTs
And I do believe he won a Golden Globe for this role.

      • milo

Didn’t say he had no experience in a musical, I said he’s not much of a singer. And Sweeney Todd is a major reason I feel that way. He certainly didn’t win that award for his singing.

Because the big bad wolf is a very normal character, isn’t it? ridiculous. It’s a fucking fairy tale!

      • John

I mostly like Johny Depp’s performances because they’re different then what anyone else would do. But what I’m saying is that he tends to be polarizing, and a lot of people dislike him. His only performances I never really cared for was Edward Sissorhands (never cared for the film in general) and Tonto in the Lone Ranger (but that wasn’t that great of a film.) Loved him in Ed Wood, Fear and Loathing, Pirates, Sweeny Todd, and Alice in Wonderland.

Then why not cast someone else??? All of the weird, over the top characters in Hollywood go straight to Depp! They should give someone else a chance too!

    • André Camilo

      I will hate, surely.

  • James Franco

Kendrick makes for one weird looking Cinderella

    • RyGuy

Why is that? I think she’s perfect for the role.

      • James Franco

That bird beak nose and thin lips are a boner killer

  • Strong Enough

no people of color allowed in this world i see

    • RyGuy

Here we go. This complaint never gets old.

      • milo

Shame on them for not having Black Cinderella, Korean Prince Charming, and Half Samoan Wheelchair Rapunzel.

      • Strong Enough

hey why not. Or would that be RAZCIT for you?

      • Strong Enough

not a complaint. just an observation

  • André Camilo

It doesn’t look half as bad as I thought it would. Looks interesting. I’m specially looking forward for Jack’s portrayal, ’cause Huttlestone was one of the best things about Les Miserables and I want to see what he will act like in his follow-up movie. I can’t quite figure out what’s going on the wolf picture though.

One more “dark/realistic” fairy tale?!? Come on Hollywood!!!

    • Nancy

You do realize that most fairy tales by their nature are “dark/realistic”?

    • milo

No question this is darker than the usual fairy tale versions but nothing particularly “realistic” about it. And it’s a film of a musical that came out in 1986 (three years before Burton even made his batman movie), so you can’t really accuse it of copying the recent movies that put a darker spin on a fairy tale.

  • ACallCreative

Came to see a pic of Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf. You reeled me in and failed to deliver.

  • milo

“Marshall had everyone sing live on set”

Nice idea but that’s what they did on Les Mis, with some very mixed results. Hopefully he won’t be afraid to have the cast go back in the studio and replace takes that need to be redone.
